PROF ARGONZA'S TV5 INTERVIEW ON 'HENPECKED HUSBANDS' - StartUp

PROF ARGONZA?S TV5 INTERVIEW ON ?HENPECKED HUSBANDS?

Erle Frayne D. Argonza

?

?Are you an under the saya?? is one querry that can put husband off-guard. It is taboo for henpecked husbands in the Philippines to admit to their being 2nd fiddle to their respective wives, and one should share generous thoughts of accolades of one such husband who would make a disclosure of his subordinate state in a marital equation.

?

This titillating yet controversial topic was among the latest themes of the Tayuan Mo at Panindigan of TV5, among the rising PH media programs on public service talk shows (news & information category). The program just opened this year 2011, and already its informative yet entertaining format has been attracting viewers from diverse sectors, including the intelligentsia.

?

I was again invited by the program management to guest in the Tayuan stint. The henpecked husband episode was hosted by Aida Uy, Giselle Sanchez, and Jojo Alajar. The thematic discussion focused on socio-psychological factors, notably personality, causing the henpecked husband phenomenon.

?

Asked whether personality indeed factors into the asymmetry of marriage, I opined affirmatively that such is the fact. Wives who are Choleric personality in make up?strong personality, leader-organizer, stern, commander?will tend to be on top of the marital chain of command. That is, if the respective husbands turn out to be Phlegmatic personality type?passive, routinary worker, subordinates?who tend to work as clerks, utility workers, or related routinary-patterned circumstance.

?

In any organization, cholerics would tend to be the bosses while the phlegmatics would be better at following commands and helping to put systems to work in a work setting. In marriage, cholerics would be the domineering spouse, while phlegmatics would be subordinate spouse.

?

Lucky enough for the henpecked husband if his wife happens to be a bit balanced in personality. The wife won?t end up abusing the husband no end. But if the wife is a dysfunctional person, who is sick of antisocial-to-sociopathy syndromes (personality disorder), then expect conflict in the relationship. The 2nd case is what happened to the famed Tiger Woods, who found solace in the company of women he can connect with, as he cannot resonate with his own legal wife?he is henpecked, in other words.

?

Asked whether ancient Philippine society & culture could also factor into the asymmetry, I likewise answered in the affirmative. It is a consensus among social anthropologists and sociologists that matriarchy preceded matriarchy in cultural evolution.

?

I recall that in our graduate school class on economic history under the historian Dr. Dery, we did discussed the same phenomenon. Accordingly, before the advent of Western colonialism, women were either co-equal to or superior to men in Philippine society. Patriarchy that was introduced by Western powers didn?t totally erase male subordination to women as a whole, as the subordination appeared in the form of ?under the saya?.

?

In the current context of post-modernity, when the vestiges of Victorian Era male-dominated sexism are crumbling by the day, we see more and more of henpecked husbands admitting to the reality. Whether another over-arching historic phase of matriarchy is now confronting us is too contentious an issue, but we must admit at least to the situation where asymmetry co-exists with symmetry in marital equations.

?

Health-wise, marital asymmetry is 50% healthy and 50% unhealthy. The relationship is like unto a sea-saw, where half the possibility is on one side while the other possibility is on the other side of a tenuous fulcrum. It will be up to the henpecked husband to manage the bond more equitably, to ensure that healthy relation breeds the most optimal growth for both parties.

CNN's Piers Morgan denies role in UK hacking scandal (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? CNN talk show host and former News of the World editor Piers Morgan on Tuesday angrily denied claims by a British lawmaker that he had taken part in phone hacking during his years as a journalist in Britain.

Morgan, who hosts the U.S. nightly talk and current affairs show "Piers Morgan Tonight," said he may have been a victim of hacking but that he had never hacked a phone himself.

"That MP (member of parliament) just claimed I boasted in my book of using phone-hacking for a scoop," Morgan said on Twitter during Tuesday's hearing by a British parliamentary panel in London on the scandal engulfing newspapers in Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation empire.

"Complete nonsense. Just read the book," Morgan tweeted. "I've never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, or published any stories based on the hacking of a phone."

Morgan, who edited the now-defunct News of The World in 1994-1995, was responding to remarks by British MP Louise Mensch at Tuesday's televised grilling of Rupert and James Murdoch, which was seen around the world.

Mensch stated that Morgan had boasted in his 2005 book "The Insider: The Private Diaries of a Scandalous Decade" of having won a scoop for his Daily Mirror tabloid newspaper by using a code to gain entry into another person's cell phone.

Morgan said Mensch had got her facts mixed up.

In the book, he wrote that he suspected he was a victim of phone hacking. "I wrote in my book that someone warned me phones could be hacked, so I changed my pin number."

Morgan, who said little during the first two weeks of the phone hacking scandal in Britain, said on his show on Monday that he did not believe that any story published in either the News of The World or The Daily Mirror under his editorship was obtained by unlawful means.

He also defended Rupert Murdoch, saying that he found it "impossible, personally knowing the man, to believe that he would have known about law-breaking on his newspapers, let alone would he condone it."

Morgan, 46, also worked on Murdoch's daily newspaper The Sun between 1989-94 before moving to The News of the World and then The Daily Mirror in London from 1995-2004.

He took over veteran Larry King's slot on CNN in January 2011 and is also a judge on the TV show "America's Got Talent".

Peyronie?s disease, a connective tissue disease in which fibrous plaques develop in the soft tissues of the penis, occurs in approximately 1% of men. Typically, patients seek treatment after experiencing painful erections and difficulty of sex, problems that can be very emotional and stressful. D. Eileen Fisher, and co-authors present a case study illustrating the clinical implications of Peyronie?s disease in April 2008 issue of Urologic Nursing.

It ?important that the patient?s sexual partners and maintain communication, the authors say, suggest and encourage nurses advice. Fisher and co-authors argue that education will help the patient manage symptoms that affect their quality of life.

The treatments often lead to long-term and may include medications, injections and surgery, which helps to decrease the size of the plaque, penile curvature and pain. The authors note that at present there is no research that documents medical treatment fully effective. They recommend further research to identify interventions that improve surgical results.

Excerpt Monday ? Saranghae (I Love You) by Imari Jade ...

Welcome Imari Jade to this week?s Excerpt Monday!

Excerpt

?Right this way, Mr. Lee,? a very tall French female chauffer said to Yi-jun after they made it through customs and out of the airport. Yi-jun escorted Cristal over to a stretch white limousine and past the stunning brunette driver with legs that just went on forever as she held the door open for them.

?Thank you, Beatrice,? Yi-jun said to the young woman. ?Take us to Hotel Ritz.?

?Oui,? Beatrice replied.

He said something else to her in French that made Beatrice chuckle and close the door. She walked around and climbed into the front seat. ?Take the scenic route.? He lifted the partition and snuggled back into the seat.

Cristal secured the seatbelt across her shoulder and waist. If he was trying to impress her he?d done that by not attacking her while she slept aboard the plane. Anything else would just be a waste of time. She was only there for the interview and to cover the fashion show?nothing else.

Yi-jun reached over and touched a couple of buttons. Soulful French music filtered out through the speakers, and an ice bucket containing a frosty bottle of wine and two glasses appeared between their seats. He handed her one of the glasses, popped the cork and filled her glass before filling his.

?Isn?t it a bit early for wine?? she asked as he made a toast.

?Not in Paris,? he responded pronouncing it like the natives with a hint of Korean accent.

Cristal sipped. It was the good stuff. He was using the big artillery. ?Thanks.?

?You?re welcome.? He sipped from his glass.

?So is this what movie stars do on a regular basis??

?I don?t know about anyone else, but yes, I do like to travel in style.? He paused. ?You don?t like it??

?Don?t get me wrong. It?s nice but I try not to get accustomed to things I won?t be doing on a regular basis.?

?Can you at least give me a smile??

Oh, well she guessed she could do that. Cheese, she thought giving it her best effort. Did his eyes flicker when she smiled? It made him look wicked sexy.

?Beautiful,? he said not taking his eyes away from hers.

Cristal blushed and looked away.

?What?s wrong, don?t you like me?? Yi-jun asked.

?That?s not it. I?m just not used to all this attention.?

Yi-jun refilled her glass. ?I can?t believe that your boyfriend does not spoil you.?

Cristal chuckled. ?What boyfriend??

?You?re kidding, right??

?No, I?m not joking and it?s a question you should have asked me before you whisked me away for a week. If I had one he?d be pretty pissed off by now.?

?Probably,? Yi-jun agreed. ?But at the moment I wasn?t thinking about anyone else but me and you. Sometimes I like to seize the moment. It?s one of my weaknesses.?

Cristal bit her bottom lip to keep from smiling. The great Yi-jun was admitting that he wasn?t perfect. ?Do you have any other weaknesses??

?Yes, pretty female journalists with red painted toes.?

?A foot freak. Groovy.? He tried to refill her glass a third time but she stopped him. ?Two is my limit before breakfast.?

?A wise decision. I will stop too to save room for the scrumptious breakfast awaiting us after we cheek into our hotel room.?

Cristal raised an eyebrow. ?I hope you just omitted the ?s? of that last word by accident.?

He smiled smugly. ?Just checking to see if you were awake. Yes, we have two rooms.? He chuckled. ?You can?t blame a man for trying.?

?Yes, I can.? She emptied he glass and put it back into the compartment. ?Do you always take women on fancy trips??

Yi-jun put his empty glass back next to hers. ?No, you?re the first.?

She eyed him suspiciously. ?How come I don?t believe you??

?I can?t answer that. For some reason you have this pre-conceived idea of what my life is like.?

?Let me see, if I have it down. You?re a young, gorgeous movie star with enough money to do anything you choose to do with it. You?re rich, spoiled and surround yourself with beautiful and expensive toys. You date one specific type of woman, big-bobbed and empty-headed ones that look good on your arm walking down the red carpet, but who aren?t smart enough to know that they?re only there to make you look good.?

Yi-jun stared at her, guarding his emotions. ?True,? he replied.

?So why am I here with you? I?m not big-boobed or empty-headed.?

?Because I got an erection the moment you called me a jerk. I knew right at that moment that I had to find out everything I could about you.?

Cristal smirked. ?So you orchestrated all of this just because you got a hard-on??

Yi-jun nodded. ?Not just any hard-on, the mother of all hard-ons. It took several hours for it to do down.? He smiled.

?You are so crazy,? Cristal said with a chuckle. ?It would have been much easier just to pick yourself up a groupie. There has to be millions of women who would die just to spend a night in your bed.?

Yi-jun stopped smiling. ?I didn?t want a groupie in my bed. I wanted you.?

Cristal stopped laughing. ?Why??

?Because you are the last woman on earth who would sleep with me willingly. You aren?t impressed with my money, my job or my extremely good looks. In fact, you despise everything about me.?

?So you kidnapped me for revenge??

Yi-jun shook his head, sending a spray of black hair across his forehead. ?No, I arranged all of this because you?re the woman I plan to spend the rest of my life with.?

Her.meneutics: When Sex Becomes an Idol

? Much Ado About Mark Driscoll | Main

July 18, 2011

Jenell Williams Paris's The End of Sexual Identity seeks to overturn the power that sexual identity labels ? homosexual and heterosexual ? have in and outside the church.

In the past few months, I couldn?t help noticing the flurry of articles about the PCUSA?s decision to ordain people in same-sex relationships, the repeal of the military?s Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell policy, the passage of same-sex marriage laws in New York, and the decision of Chaz Bono, daughter of Sonny and Cher, to become a man.

Yet conversations about sex and sexual identity emerge as often around our dinner tables as on the front page of the paper. Recently, a pastor told me about a married member of his congregation who routinely cheats on his wife with other men. A friend described helping a female friend pick out an engagement ring so she could propose to her girlfriend. Another friend sat at our dinner table and talked about leaving the church after years of celibacy because he couldn?t deny his gay identity. Jenell Williams Paris, an anthropology and sociology professor at Messiah College, seeks to enter this cultural conversation in her new book, The End of Sexuality: Why Sex Is Too Important to Define Who We Are (InterVarsity Press). Moreover, Paris seeks to change the conversation within the church. Her analysis of contemporary culture offers a helpful aid to Christians trying to wade through the complex issues surrounding gender and sexuality in the modern age.

Paris does not want to overturn centuries of traditional Christian doctrine about sexuality, singleness, and marriage. Rather, she wants Christians to understand the manner in which we have capitulated to our culture, and then she wants to help churches create communities that offer a better way for all people, regardless of sexual experience, desire, or practice. To begin that new way, Paris insists we reclaim our core identity as God?s beloved rather than identify ourselves according to sexual preferences, either heterosexual or homosexual, which are relatively modern labels. Paris writes, ?All sexual identity categories have a common trouble; they tell us that what a person wants, sexually, is an important measure of who a person is.? The same could be said for other identity categories, be they ethnic, racial, economic, or related to ability and disability. As Christians, first and foremost we know ourselves as members of the body of Christ, as new creations by the power and work of the Spirit of God. Only as we recognize this truth about ourselves and about our sisters and brothers can conversations about sexual practice proceed in a constructive way.

Despite her critique of sexual identity categories, Paris does not seek to overturn traditional biblical understandings of sex and sexuality. She calls herself a ? ?sex only within marriage between a man and a woman? kind of Christian,? and she acknowledges, ?God did create humans male and female. But sin has influenced every dimension of human life . . . .? She upholds a biblical understanding of creation, sin, and redemption, although she might have spent more time examining the theological significance of being created ?male and female, in the image of God.? Paris approaches the Genesis passage from a sociological standpoint, but she needs to provide an exegetical lens as well. Furthermore, she is so concerned about questioning the cultural construction of sexual identity that she fails to thoroughly discuss the Bible?s understanding of masculinity and femininity.

Paris asserts that reclaiming our core identity enables us to eliminate a hierarchy of ?heterosexual? and ?homosexual? within the church. Only then can we begin conversations about holiness in general and sexual holiness in particular. She writes, ?In post-sexual identity Christian communities, sexual holiness becomes a common standard for all believers. Same-sex attraction and behavior still matter, but not as identity-constituting characteristics and not as points of theological disagreement that warrant separation or exclusion.? Sexual holiness, according to Paris, includes celibacy for people who experience same-sex attraction as well as for people who are unmarried and attracted to someone of the opposite sex. And rather than call for individuals to repent, be they individuals who have participated in same-sex sex or individuals who have condemned and judged others, Paris instead calls for cultural renewal throughout the church.

Paris suggests that celibacy is not currently ?plausible? because there are very few ways to experience intimacy without sex in contemporary culture, even within the church. She upholds an ideal of celibacy that exists with institutional and relational support: ?Long-term celibacy becomes plausible when there are widely held values, positive language, meaningful social roles and real social support for celibates.? Unfortunately, she doesn?t offer specific examples of communities ? past or present ? in which such support has existed. And she could spend more time examining the theological significance of Jesus and Paul and other New Testament figures who live holy and full lives as celibate persons.

The End of Sexual Identity could use more theology to balance out its anthropological focus. Nevertheless, Paris upholds a Christian understanding of who we are as human beings while offering a critique of the church for its appropriation of modern cultural categories that create false power structures and divisions.

Which brings me back to the headlines and dinner conversations of late. Paris?s book offers hope that the church might become a refuge for people who have been marginalized by cultural assumptions about sex. Instead of supporting divisions, The End of Sexual Identity reminds readers that identity is bestowed upon us by God, not by our sexuality. It rebukes me for my participation in the divisions created by sexual identity categories. And it helps me consider ways to support and equip single people as meaningful members of our church community. Paris herself doesn?t go this far, but her book also reminds me that ? even when it involves self-denial, even when it involves countercultural lifestyles ? God?s way of holiness is good for all people. It reminds me that the way of holiness is the way of love.

News And Society ? Easier Information ? Blog Archive ? Solar Panel ...

Posted on July 16, 2011, 8:20 am, by admin.

Solar panels offer many benefits because they create clean energy by using the natural elements of our planet. In addition to this, they are a renewable energy source (which means it?s a resource that?ll never run out) which is an added bonus. If you?ve contemplated installing solar panels but you?re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy. Whether it?s about constructing your solar panel or your own woodwork plans enterprise, you?ll want to focus on excellent to obtain the best results.

One way to look at this is that solar cells are contained in things called solar panels. These solar cells convert sunlight into electricity. When sunlight hits the silicone material in solar cells, an electrical process occurs. Only a half of a volt of power per cell is generated from sunlight necessitating the use of many solar panels to provide electricity. You can actually make your own solar panel at home and it doesn?t really cost much, especially since then you will be able to enjoy the benefits of free electricity. For those of you that are not very handy with tools, it is recommended that you obtain help from your family that can help you with sawing and soldering wires.

If you want to install solar panels, you first have to calculate how many hours of sunlight you get on average. This is because there are two types of solar panels, namely concentrating solar collectors and non-concentrating collectors. If you live in an area that gets quite a bit of sunlight throughout the year, you should get a concentrating solar collector, which can absorb a great deal of direct sunlight. If, however, you only get a limited amount of sunlight, a non-concentrating solar collector would be a better choice, as these can also absorb reflected sunlight. There are many people or companies who could tell you, based on your location, which type of solar panel is best for you; even if you want to install them yourself, you could call someone to get this information. Building your own solar panel is as effortless as adirondack chair plans in case you put in your focus.

With the DIY method of solar panel creation your will need to create a box for the solar cells to rest in groups within when the desired outcome is a solar panel. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. You can use whatever wood type suits your fancy but we can recommend the usage of plywood. You?ll need wood inside the box that can hold the cells separate as well as a plexiglass covering for the box. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. It?s important that you remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled out of. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you?ve mounted the solar cells.

There is no better time than now to switch to an alternative power source, considering the state of the global economy, especially since many experts fear that the worst is yet to come. When you have solar panels, you can be reassured that you can power your home no matter how expensive utilities get, or even if services are disrupted. Go ahead and begin building your own solar panel which is as easy as garden shed plans.
