America's Lost its Mojo? Think Again
(NewsUSA) ? Let?s play a game.
Number of years it took to create the entire transcontinental railroad, which conquered mountains and deserts in opening the West to settlers back in the 1860s: 7.
Number of years it took to complete Boston?s infamous ?Big Dig? highway project, which opened officials to cries of ?boondoggle? as cost over-runs and design flaws mounted: 16.
No, this isn?t another story about how America?s lost its mojo. In fact, the same company that laid hundreds of miles of those railroad tracks, Union Pacific, is celebrating its 150th anniversary, and ? while the public may accept politics-as-usual from their leaders ? you don?t stay in business that long without consistently excelling.
?Practically everything that touches our daily lives moves on a train,? says president and CEO Jack Koraleski. ?That includes grains and produce to feed families, concrete for roads, lumber to build homes, and chemicals to make our water safe for drinking.?
This year alone, Union Pacific (www.up.com) will invest a record $3.6 billion in infrastructure ? ?so taxpayers don?t have to,? as Koraleski notes ? and hire about 4,000 workers to help U.S. industries transport their products both domestically and globally.
Part of that investment is to meet the huge demand, here and elsewhere, for corn and wheat grown by farmers in Iowa and Kansas. (U.S. corn yield alone is expected to exceed 170 bushels per acre by the year 2015.)
Another part is to help seamlessly move everything from cars to steel to plastic both to and from Mexico ? the majority of it going south ? which is our biggest trading partner after Canada.
And for those wondering what The New Big Thing might be to get the economy booming again, one thing is on almost everyone?s radar screen.
Shale drilling, it?s said, is America?s next Gold Rush.
And, yes, even as energy analysts go ga-ga predicting all sorts of bonanzas from the new technology that?s made it easier to extract fossil fuels from the ground ? Citigroup puts the number of potential new jobs alone at 3.6 million ? good, ol? reliable Union Pacific is already busy shipping U.S. crude oil to Gulf Coast refineries short on pipeline capacity. As much as 100,000 carloads of crude by year?s end, according to the railroad?s estimates, plus as much as 230,000 carloads of steel pipe and frac sand used for drilling.

Australia lawmakers reject gay marriage plan

Australian lawmakers voted on Wednesday by more than two-to-one against a proposal to legalize gay marriage.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that 98 members of the House of Representatives ? including Prime Minister Julia Gillard -- voted against the plan, while 42 had supported it.
However Labor party politician Anthony Albanese, who supported the law, said that "all the figures show that there is majority community support on this issue... and I think at some future time, parliament will catch up with the community opinion," the broadcaster reported. "Just a few years ago there wouldn't have been the support of anything like 42 votes on the floor of the national parliament for a marriage equality bill," Albanese said.
ABC reported that the head of the Australian Christian Lobby, Jim Wallace, had in a statement thanked those politicians who ?as a matter of conscience, voted to ensure that marriage remained between a man and a woman."
ABC noted that Senator Cory Bernardi, of the center-right Liberal party, had resigned as a parliamentary secretary to his party?s leader Tony Abbott, after suggesting during a Senate debate Tuesday night that the next step after same-sex marriage would be to allow ?three or four people that love each other being able to enter into a permanent union endorsed by society -- or any other type of relationship.?
He then added that there were ?even some creepy people out there... [who] say it is OK to have consensual sexual relations between humans and animals,? Bernardi said, according to ABC. |Will that be a future step? In the future will we say, 'These two creatures love each other and maybe they should be able to be joined in a union.? I think that these things are the next step.?
Supporter still 'confident'
The Age newspaper reported that advocates of same-sex marriage would now seek to persuade states within Australia to change the law.
"Now the federal parliament has effectively brushed the wishes of a majority of Australians aside, the states and territories will take the lead, making me confident we will see same sex marriages performed somewhere in Australia by the end of the year," Australian Marriage Equality convener Alex Greenwich said, according to the paper.
The Age added that in August Tasmania?s lower house had passed a bill to legalize gay marriage, which would now go to the state?s Legislative Council.
The paper said that Congress was to vote on another same-sex marriage bill Thursday.
Australia?s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, whose partner Sophie Allouache gave birth to a baby girl in December, said Wednesday that she was hurt by the claim from some senators that children of same-sex couples were worse off than those of mixed-gender couples, The Age reported.
"I do not regret that our daughter has Sophie and I as parents," Wong added. "I do regret that she lives in a world where some will tell her that her family is not normal. I regret that even in this chamber, elected representatives denigrate the worth of her family.?

EU, Iranian nuclear negotiators to meet
ISTANBUL (AP) ? Iran urged Western powers to engage in "purposeful" negotiations Tuesday as top EU and Iranian representatives meeting in Istanbul looked for a breakthrough on restarting talks over Tehran's nuclear program.
Pressure to get back to the bargaining table was rising the day after Iran's nuclear chief harshly attacked the integrity of the U.N.'s atomic energy organization and its investigation of allegations Iran is working on nuclear arms. Fereydoun Abbasi's defiant speech to the International Atomic Energy Association was sure to bolster hardline Israeli views that diplomatic efforts and economic penalties have had no effect on Iran, leaving military strikes as the only alternative.
Tuesday's meeting between EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili follows a round of talks in July in which an attempt was made to restart nuclear negotiations between Tehran and six world powers that fizzled in June.
"Negotiations should be purposeful; talks for talks would not be effective," Ramin Mehmanparast, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday. "We can cross the finish line only when the other side enters the talks with real motivation and strong will to solve the issue."
On Monday, Abbasi told the IAEA's 155-nation general conference that "terrorists and saboteurs" might have infiltrated the agency in an effort to detail his nation's nuclear program, in Tehran's harshest attack on the integrity of the U.N. organization. Abbasi said there were two sabotage attempts on his country's nuclear program.
In Tehran, the director of a private think tank with close links to the government said an agreement between Iran and the Western powers could emerge at the talks.
"An implicit, temporary and gradual deal between the two sides will be made," Amir Mousavi, director of the Center for Strategic Studies and International. "Both the U.S. and other Western countries seek international and regional calm and stability."
