It is important for both teachers and parents to find opportunities to communicate something positive. Home -school communication should not just be a venue for voicing concerns or making complaints. I have read many home-school communication logs.? Often times they are just be lists of ?what happened? at school or at home rather than being an effective trust building vehicle. Getting a phone call from the teacher regarding something special the child did that day makes parents feel proud and appreciative of the school.? It communicates that a phone call from school isn?t only because there is a problem. Getting a ?thank-you? note from a parent in which she acknowledges that her child demonstrated a skill at home that he/she has been working on at school makes a teacher feel valued and respected. The teacher now sees that parents take the time to write when they have something positive to say not just when they are angry or frustrated. ?When working with families, my goal is to help them develop open and honest communication and trust between themselves and the school.? ASPCA Rescues Hundreds of Cats From Animal ... - Pet Pro Plus

Cats removed and transported to temporary shelter with assistance from local, national agencies
NEW YORK, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ ? The ASPCA(R) (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(R)), at the request of the Madison County Sheriff?s Office and Madison County Animal Control in northern Florida, is managing the removal and sheltering of hundreds of cats living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions from a non-profit cat sanctuary known as Caboodle Ranch in Lee, Fla., approximately 64 miles east of Tallahassee, Fla. This is the largest number of cats the ASPCA has ever removed from one location in an animal cruelty investigation.

As a result of an investigation spanning for more than a year, a search warrant was executed Monday morning for the removal of the animals. The ASPCA is collecting additional evidence on the property for the investigation, as well as leading the removal and sheltering efforts with its Field Investigation and Response and Animal Forensics teams. The founder of Caboodle Ranch has been arrested and multiple animal cruelty charges are pending.
?After receiving numerous complaints regarding the care of animals at Caboodle Ranch, we?re glad that the appropriate enforcement action is being taken,? said Sheriff Ben Stewart with the Madison County Sheriff?s Office. ?This has been an ongoing issue that we?ve been monitoring and we?re grateful that the ASPCA is able to provide assistance with the investigation.?
?The ASPCA is pleased to be able to provide expertise and resources to support the efforts of the local authorities in investigating this ?sanctuary? that spiraled out of control,? added Tim Rickey, senior director of the ASPCA?s Field Investigations and Response team. ?This is a tragic situation. Caboodle Ranch was clearly overwhelmed with hundreds of cats in dire need of medical treatment, and the sanctuary had no adoption program or any spay/neuter efforts to effectively manage its current population. The ASPCA?s goal is to work quickly to remove these cats from the property and safely transport them to the temporary shelter, where they will be triaged by a veterinary team.?
The cats were living outside in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions with various medical issues that were left untreated. Many of the cats exhibited various signs of neglect and appear to be suffering from upper respiratory conditions and eye infections, among other medical issues. Several cats were in critical condition and responders discovered numerous deceased cats on the property.
Agencies assisting the ASPCA on scene include: Atlanta Humane Society (Atlanta, Ga.); Bay Area Disaster Animal Response Team (Belleair Bluffs, Fla.); Cat Depot (Sarasota, Fla.); Florida State Animal Response Coalition (Bushnell, Fla.); Good Mews Animal Foundation (Marietta, Ga.); Humane Society of Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.); International Fund for Animal Welfare (Yarmouth Port, Mass.); McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center (Chattanooga, Tenn.); PetSmart Charities, Inc. (Phoenix, Ariz.); and RedRover (Sacramento, Calif.). Staff from the University of Florida (Gainesville) College of Veterinary Medicine and Maples Center for Forensic Medicine at UF are also assisting with the rescue operation.
?Removing hundreds of animals is a huge undertaking, and we are truly grateful that these agencies offered their assistance in the case,? said Kathryn Destreza, director of Investigations for the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response team. ?Numerous agencies throughout Florida and as far as California have committed to helping us continue our life-saving work and giving these rescued animals a second chance.?
The cats will be transferred via the ASPCA?s animal transport trailer to a temporary shelter at an undisclosed location, where ASPCA medical director Dr. Rhonda Windham will oversee their medical triage. To assist in the triage, the ASPCA has on scene its fully equipped ?Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit,? a specially-designed vehicle outfitted with state-of-the-art forensic tools as well as medical equipment tailored for animal patients.
The undercover investigation was set into motion after complaints about the facility were received by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). PETA submitted its evidence to the Third Judicial Circuit State Attorney?s Office, Madison County Sheriff?s Office, and Madison County Animal Control. The ASPCA was contacted for assistance in the criminal investigation, evidence collection, rescue and sheltering efforts of the case.

US coach Klinsmann gets another shot at Italy

GENOA, Italy (AP) -United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann still has bad memories of playing Italy.
As Germany coach at the 2006 World Cup, Klinsmann lost to the eventual-champion Italians in the semifinals. But the former Inter Milan great will get another chance when the Americans face Italy on Wednesday in a friendly.
"It's true that I've never won against Italy," Klinsmann said. "I've lost in both matches as coach and that makes you understand that to beat the Azzurri you need to give more than 100 percent.
"I remember the World Cup semifinal. Losing that game was really hard to get over. We were playing at home dreaming of winning the World Cup," Klinsmann added. "To beat Italy you need to score first or else they'll kill you, you can't stay calm against them."
The United States is on a three-match winning streak but this is the first time Klinsmann will be able to call on his top players since November's 3-2 victory over Slovenia. It defeated Venezuela and Panama while playing with a backup squad.
Klinsmann is not interested in easy victories ahead of its opening qualifier against Antigua and Barbuda. Instead, he wants games that will provide a more realistic picture of the team. After Italy, the Americans host Scotland and Brazil in May.
"For me every game is a new adventure," Klinsmann said. "The Americans are proud to be playing against a national side such as Italy. We want to always show everyone that we know our worth on the pitch and they shouldn't underestimate us."
The United States, however, will be without Landon Donovan for the game in Genoa. He withdrew Sunday because he is ill and will miss the chance to play with Clint Dempsey for the first time since Klinsmann was hired as coach last year. Also out is Jermaine Jones with a strained right calf.
The two have been replaced by Sasha Kljestan and Brek Shea.
Italy has its own personnel problem, especially up front where it is missing injured forwards Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano. Also, Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has been left of the squad because of his fiery temper and unpredictability.
However, with Antonio Di Natale - who scored his 18th league goal of the season Sunday for Udinese - in the side, Klinsmann knows the Italians still have plenty of attacking threat.
"I really like Cesare Prandelli's Italy side," Klinsmann said. "Watching the last few games, I've really liked the attack, where there are amazing players and they press really well."
Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo has also fallen out with Prandelli and he was left out the squad after being sent off for violent conduct in the 4-1 loss at Atalanta - something which the Italy coach admits made him hand a debut call up to Osvaldo's teammate, Fabio Borini.
"We were following him but without the omission of his Roma teammate he would have had to wait for another time," Prandelli said. "It's time to stop this type of football, made up of off-the-ball fights, all it is is a sign of weakness. And in any case my footballers know it: whoever spits or reacts can't be in the national team. If they don't clean up their acts, they risk missing out on the Euros.
"I consider Balotelli to be the starting foward of this team. But now he has three months to show me he has changed. Him and Osvaldo have my number. I'm very disappointed that after the incidents they were involved in they didn't call me."

What a week it was last week.?

Our internal Network Storage Server broke down and caused some dificulties in support, then just when we had it fixed,?a few days later we had a total power outage in Cambridge which took all our servers down and offline.

I have blogged previously that we had improved our failover capability for our ASP network, and this put the technology to the test.
?
It Worked !!
?
All users using the TriSys Login Tool were completely unaffected by our outage, and were still able to login to their own desktops.
?
Our 99.99% network availability is in tact.

Reddit drafts Internet anti-piracy bill; good luck with that

Last month, during a discussion of the ill-fated Stop Online Piracy Act, at least a half dozen congressmen referred to?those?who understand the global system of?computer networks connected by?the standard?Internet protocol suite as "nerds." So it makes sense that "nerds" would attempt where our tech-ignorant representatives failed: Write their own version of an Internet regulation bill. And that's what Reddit did.
The link sharing site, which played a major role in helping to defeat SOPA last month, proposes ithe Free Internet Act (FIA), a crowdsourced alternative to the government proposals many found restrictive to both creativity and free speech. The first draft of FIA, originally launched by members of the?/r/fia subreddit (forum), is available on Google Docs.?

Designed to "promote prosperity, creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation" on the Internet, FIA is?big on Internet freedom, while offering little for the entertainment industry to embrace.?People in the bad place will enjoy tall glasses of frosty H20 before?the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America?? two of D.C.'s most powerful and well-funded lobbies???allow FIA anywhere near our nation's capital.

It has been there for quite a while but it came when the missionaries came so you cannot really say it?s old or mature enough to say it has the nuances and structure it should have but you must not undermine the fact that you have American English, Scottish English, English English, so why can?t we begin to treat it like a proper language. People have been writing novels with pidgin.
Recently, even younger writers such as Uzodinma. These are published by high end, mainstream publishers. Not to go too far, let?s look at Sozaboy, written in rotten English as Ken Saro Wiwa put it. I feel it is one of those languages you can easily speak outside the country. If you and I were to be having a conversation in a London cafe and we don?t want anybody to hear what we are discussing, we?ll switch to pidgin.
But in the case of pidgin there are so many kinds of it. If you are from Warri you might not even understand what someone from Benue is trying to say and then in the North they hardly even speak any pidgin at all.
Not that much but I guess that is where the challenge is because you can?t technically say it?s a nationwide language but it?s the closest thing we have to what you can say is a little bit indigenous and cuts right across. The market woman in Umuahia, you have to speak pidgin to her iF you don?t speak Igbo. If you go to Kano, the spare parts guy selling to the mallam, they are not speaking Hausa.

Pidgin runs along the coastal line in West Africa because they are the first to interact with the explorers and missionaries before it passes on to the hinterland so when you see Warri, Sapele, Sierra Leone, Liberia speaking the language it?s because that is where it came from. Everyone keeps saying pidgin can?t do this and that then WAZOBIA came and everybody started listening to them. It?s almost like saying now that everybody has to understand Wole Soyinka?s type of English.
Proper English
Even the proper English- putting proper in quote- there are people that speak it differently. The English that Patrick Obayamen- former house of rep lawmaker from Edo State- speaks, is different. If you don?t put a dictionary near you, you?ll not understand it. Every language has its variance. I have seen different ways people speak it and write it, which is very interesting. It has a standard, a structure.
It?s not written down?
Among my writers, when they send me articles I have to edit them. What am I editing? Something that has no structure cannot be edited. The white man has not put it in a big book and written about it and all that, we begin to say pidgin is not structured. You just have to learn it, master it the way you master the English language, write about it too. Not all the people who can write it can speak it and not all the people who can speak it can write it.
But there has to be some sort of structure?
When it comes to the written form it has to be able to communicate and anything that needs to be able to communicate must have a structure.
Whose job would that be. Do we just allow it to develop naturally or should we have departments for pidgin studies in universities?
When I was in Ekpoma where I read English as my first degree, we had pidgin English as a second language. Professor Longe taught us that, but until we start doing certain things? then there was no newspaper that used pidgin English as a form of writing. People tend to think it?s only spoken and should not be written.
I think we are the ones that will start it from somewhere. What I?ve started is a forum where one can take a deeper look at this language, with which you speak to everybody, from your maiguard to the president. ?ol? boy, that your hat get as e be o?. It should have a home and that is what I?ve done. People can come and have a conversation that is peculiar to us.
It?s all well and good, though it?s easier on one?s imagination to think of pidgin as a language that is used for comedy or even commerce, music and so on. It cuts across. In terms of news, there is actually a lot of meaning lost when news is translated into pidgin, but that is one side of it. The other side, the way people perceive pidgin in contemporary times in terms of the way people look at WAZOBIA and so on. They don?t perceive them as serious. When they want serious news they go for English.
Again it depends on how you form it. I listen to WAZOBIA a lot. When I first came into the country it was my channel of choice. It was exciting. Why do people say French is a sexy language? The language of love? And they have been able use that. Why can?t we say pidgin is a language of happiness. Does it mean a lot of people don?t hate in France. Does it mean their news is all about love?
When you listen to news on WAZOBIA, the sombre ones, the newscaster is able to tone it down. What we are doing with ZazuNews.com, we look for the news that pertain to the people who are speaking this language. I am not really targeting the upper class who if they hear their child speaking pidgin they will probably slap the child.
Can these people read?
There has been a Yoruba newspaper forever and we have people reading it. We also have to find a way to deliver it to these people. People that you don?t think can read, how many times have you sent them recharge card number or text: abeg check carburettor. How much you go pay for my UBA account.

I?ve gotten plenty of phone calls and e-mails from friends and family in the States asking me how I?m coping this week with the angry and deadly protests here over Quran burnings at a military base. I'm OK. The barrage of concern directed my way whenever there is a flare-up of some sort here has become part of my normal security updates.?

Given the frequency of these lockdowns ? every time there is an assassination, explosion or protest, or often even the threat of one ? an entire catering industry has formed to attend to the needs of those locked down expats stuck in their houses, bored, and flush with cash.
And if you try to walk across the street to buy some oven fresh bread, your compound Kalashnikov-toting guards will not only deny you exit, they?ll thoroughly reprimand you, though they themselves will just switch their clothes at the end of their shift and walk home, disappearing into the city without a care in the world.?

Scientists looked at 47,600 new cases of breast cancer reported in the UK in 2008.
They say about 42 percent, roughly 20,000 cases, could have been prevented through healthier lifestyle choices.
Dr Rachel Thompson, Deputy Head of Science at WCRF, says?There is convincing evidence that alcohol consumption increases the risk of breast cancer. In postmenopausal women there is convincing evidence that body fatness also increases risk and there is evidence that regular physical activity probably reduces the risk of breast cancer.?
WCRF recommends being physically active for at least 30 minutes a day and? limiting alcoholic drinks to two a day for men and one a day for women.
A healthy weight is defined as a Body Mass Index between 18.5 and 25.

Recreation Head: Lights at EPCAL 'Not Gonna Happen' for Now ...
After Recreation Superintendent Ray Coyne made a pitch to the town board last week to get lights on new ballfields in Calverton, he said on Wednesday afternoon that the field will be opening without them.
"It's not gonna happen," he said.
At last Thursday's town board work session, the board appeared split over bonding roughly $800,000 to install lights at new fields at Enterprise Park at Calverton, on Route 25.
While Councilman Jim Wooten said going without lights would be "like moving into a house with no furniture" - and Councilman John Dunleavy agreed - Supervisor Sean Walter called the measure irresponsible to the town's credit rating, with Councilman George Gabrielsen on his side.
"We run the risk of a credit downgrade if we keep spending money we don't have," Walter said last week. Walter referred back to a Moody's credit affirmation the town received in November, as the town maintained its Aa2 rating. The supervisor has cited the rating, allowing the town to continue borrowing at relatively low rates (3.5 percent now, he said), as one of his main accomplishments during his tenure at town hall.
The supervisor, and Financial Administrator Bill Rothaar, said that conversations with credit rating agents during their fall meetings indicated that any future borrowing could adversely affect the town's rating, both said.
Coucilwoman Jodi Giglio appeared at first to favor bonding for the lights, calling the lit fields a marketing draw for sports teams. However in the end the math wasn't convincing enough.
Giglio said on Tuesday night that she wanted to see more - and more promising - numbers from Coyne confirming the revenue the town could realize if lights were added to the park.?Gabrielsen, the town board's liaison to the Recreation Committee, said the town would kick into an "aggressive fundraising mode" in reaching out to leagues to fill the fields this summer and beyond.
"Once I see contracts - we know we have teams who want to play - I know the rest of the board will be excited as I will be," she said.
Coyne said he fears that installing lights at a later date will not only present a missed opportunity to the town until they are installed, but also bear a future cost, since cranes will have to be brought onto the field to install the light poles, potentially damaging the walkways and fields. Gabrielsen said he didn't foresee a future problem.
The town still plans on paving walkways, 200 spaces in parking lots, install dugouts, and new fencing along Route 25 before the fields open. Wednesday night it votes to publish and post a bid for parking lot work.
While Gabrielsen said he'd like to see the fields open by Memorial Day weekend, Coyne said they may not open until mid-June.
