There are three things that keep a partnership and a practice growing? love, commitment and devotion.
Love doesn?t come first, though, desire does, but?desire is never satiated; it can only cause suffering. When we find someone new and special, desire reels us in. Similarly, when we see master teachers flow with grace, desire to accomplish the physical feats of yoga sometimes entice us. If we cling to this desire that leads us to relationships and our practice, it can ultimately result in our suffering.
In the Ashtanga workshop this past weekend, Michele gave a great lecture on sensation, as the seed from which compassion and Samadhi ?(complete absorption into the object of one?s love)?grow. When we first begin our practice, the intense sensations we receive from inflexibility are often viewed as something that inhibits our ability to achieve a goal (desire for results), rather than a blessing that allows us to fully commit to a deeper experiential moment. ?The path of practice is difficult, long and sometimes painful, but also intensely rewarding. ?It is through commitment to practice- a path sometimes punctuated by injury, disillusion, difficulty, and frustration- ?that we develop devotion. Devotion results from the strength and compassion gained by continuing our practice through difficult times.
Relationships also begin with desire when we meet someone special. As relationships become deeper, commitment ?is needed because desire and difficulty are part of the path of life. ?Relationships cannot be based on what you think you might get out of it (attachment to an outcome). If you fall into this trap, you may begin to project the things you believe you desire upon others and will end up dissatisfied. Devotion to your relationship in all its wavering moments brings deep love, but commitment like this, takes two; which sometimes makes achieving Samadhi easier At least then you only have to love absolutely everyone with complete compassion, gratitude and service!
He who neither rejoices nor grieves,
Neither likes nor dislikes,
Who has renounced both the good and the evil,
And who is full of devotion, such a person is dear to Me. ? The Bhagavad Gita
