When effective communication occurs between home and school, there is less likely to be misunderstandings and it?is more likely that supportive collaborative relationships will develop. It is important for both teachers and parents to find opportunities to communicate something positive. Home -school communication should not just be a venue for voicing concerns or making complaints. I have read many home-school communication logs.? Often times they are just be lists of ?what happened? at school or at home rather than being an effective trust building vehicle. Getting a phone call from the teacher regarding something special the child did that day makes parents feel proud and appreciative of the school.? It communicates that a phone call from school isn?t only because there is a problem. Getting a ?thank-you? note from a parent in which she acknowledges that her child demonstrated a skill at home that he/she has been working on at school makes a teacher feel valued and respected. The teacher now sees that parents take the time to write when they have something positive to say not just when they are angry or frustrated. ?When working with families, my goal is to help them develop open and honest communication and trust between themselves and the school.? I help them learn how to ?talk? to teachers, voice their concerns in a positive, non-judgmental manner, and how to ask questions keeping in mind that the child is always the winner when there is effective home-school communication.
