National Republicans are not sending Turner much money right now, but if Weprin descends into a proper meltdown that will surely change.

A Republican winning a non-Staten Island congressional district in New York City would be a very unmistakable sign that the Democratic Party is in serious trouble. A Republican victory is still unlikely, and it'd be largely because David Weprin has turned out to be a bad candidate, but in an average year, a distinctly terrible Democratic candidate would still win Anthony Weiner's seat without much trouble.

Of course, the district may not even exist next year, thanks mostly to Weiner. New York State lost two districts, and one of New York City's districts will likely be given up along with one of upstate's Republican districts. So if the Democrats do blow this one, there's an easy out.

Officials: 29 dead in suicide bomb in Iraq mosque (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber blew himself up inside Baghdad's largest Sunni mosque Sunday night, killing 29 people during prayers, a shocking strike on a place of worship similar to the one that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war five years ago.

Iraqi security officials said parliament lawmaker Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni, was among the dead in the 9:40 p.m attack.

Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad's military operations command, confirmed the bombing happened inside the Um al-Qura mosque during prayers in the western Baghdad neighborhood of al-Jamiaah. The blue-domed building is the largest Sunni mosque in Baghdad.

"I heard something like a very severe wind storm, with smoke and darkness, and shots by the guards," said eyewitness Mohammad Mustafa, who hit in the hand by shrapnel. "Is al-Qaida able to carry out their acts against worshippers? How did this breach happen?"

That the bomber detonated his explosives vest inside the mosque is particularly alarming, as it is reminiscent of a 2006 attack on a Shiite shrine in the Sunni city of Samarra that fueled widespread sectarian violence and nearly ignited a nationwide civil war. In that strike, Sunni militants planted bombs around the Samarra shrine, destroying its signature gold dome and badly damaging the rest of the structure.

Under deposed dictator Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, Iraq's Shiite majority was persecuted and repressed. Shiites took power after his ouster, stoking Sunni resentment that bore the insurgency.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's bombing, but suicide attacks generally are a hallmark of al-Qaida, which is dominated by Sunnis. Intelligence officials have speculated that al-Qaida will do almost anything to re-ignite sectarian violence, but the group recently had focused on attacking Iraqi security forces and the government to prove how unstable Iraq remains.

Two security officials and medics at two Baghdad hospitals put the casualty toll at 29 dead and 38 wounded. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Al-Moussawi put the death toll at only six and said there was no significant damage to the mosque. Conflicting death tolls are common immediately after attacks in Iraq.

In a statement early Monday, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on Iraqis to stand strong against terrorists and "pursue them wherever they are."

"Solidarity and unity, and standing as one line behind the army and the police, are the only way to eliminate this danger, which does not differentiate between the Iraqis and targets all of us," al-Maliki said.

The attack hit Sunnis who were praying in a special service during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which ends Tuesday. It demonstrates anew that security measures to protect Iraqis as U.S. forces prepare to leave remain riddled with gaps, and shows the extent to which militants want to extend violence even as the eight-year- U.S. presence winds down.

The mosque's security is provided by the government-supported Sunni Endowment, and al-Moussawi raised the possibility that the bomber had inside help.

"For sure there must have been someone inside the mosque who helped the bomber," al-Moussawi said. "It must have been someone who is protecting the mosque."

Sheik Ahmed Abdul Gafur al-Samarraie, the head of Sunni Endowment, agreed that was a possibility and said the group would investigate how the bomber got inside the mosque, where an estimated 200 people were praying. He said this is the first time such a security breach had occurred, and said guards did not suspect the bomber because he had a broken hand that was bandaged.

Al-Samarraie said the bomber exploded just a few feet (meters) from him, and called himself the likely target. He blamed al-Qaida.

"Those people are infidels and unbelievers, and their criminal acts will never deflect us from our unity," al-Samarraie told Iraqi state TV. "We will remain as unified Iraqis."

He described "a deep sorrow for the murder of a child who was praying today. The blast tore his body to pieces: his legs in one place and a hand in another."

Al-Fahdawi, the Sunni lawmaker, was targeted twice by al-Qaida, in 2004 and 2005, when he was the head of Sunni Endowment in Anbar province.

The strike happened hours after the U.N.'s outgoing top diplomat in Iraq said the government in Baghdad must determine whether its security forces are strong enough to thwart violence before requiring U.S. troops to leave at the end of the year.

In his last interview after two years in Baghdad, U.N. envoy Ad Melkert said Iraqi security forces have made "clear improvements" but declined to say if he thinks they are ready to protect the country without help from the American military.

"It's up to the government, really, to assess if it is enough to deal with the risks that are still around," Melkert said in a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press on the eve of his departure Monday.

"Obviously, security remains a very important issue."

The U.S. and Iraqi governments are negotiating how many American troops might stay, and what role they would play, in a mission that has already lasted more than eight years. A 2008 security agreement between Baghdad and Washington requires all U.S. troops to be out of Iraq by Dec. 31, but the country's shaky security situation and vulnerability to Iranian influence has prompted politicians on both sides to buck widespread public disapproval and reconsider the deadline.

A decision on whether U.S. troops will remain is not expected for several weeks at least, and the American military is already starting to pack up to leave. About 46,000 U.S. troops currently are in Iraq. The White House has offered to keep up to 10,000 there.

Violence has dropped dramatically across Iraq from just a few years ago, but deadly attacks still happen nearly every day.

New York: US commercial property prices rose 0.9 per cent in June, the second straight monthly gain, as buyers increased purchases in smaller cities in search of higher returns, according to Moody?s Investors Service.

The index, which measures broad price trends, is down 6.6 per cent from a year earlier and 45 per cent below the peak of October 2007, the company said in a report.

The increase represents a ?firming up? of the market bottom as investors moved beyond trophy properties and major US coastal cities, Moody?s said.

Turmoil in capital markets and a recent drop-off in lending of commercial mortgage backed securities may delay ?significant? near-term price increases, according to the report.

Europe?s debt crisis, signs the US will remain mired in sluggish growth through next year and the Standard & Poor?s downgrade of the nation?s credit rating roiled financial markets and triggered a selloff in securities linked to debt on commercial real estate.

Wall Street firms are ratcheting back originating new commercial-property loans to package for sale, making it harder for banks to gauge how much cash they will recoup in bond sales and boosting rates for borrowers.

CoStar Group Inc?s National All Property Type Composite Index climbed 2.2 per cent from May, the second straight month that measure gained, the Washington-based real estate data provider said August 10. The index was down 1.5 per cent from a year earlier and is 33 per cent below a peak reached in 2007.

Green Street Advisors Inc, a real estate research company in Newport Beach, California, reported commercial property values were unchanged in July from the previous month and up 18 per cent from a year earlier.

Prices are down 10 per cent from their peak, the company said August 4.

Green Street?s index is weighted by asset value and includes deals that are in negotiation or under contract.

Moody?s tracks completed sales, which are equally weighted in calculating the index.

Increase in short home sales

US homes nearing foreclosure accounted for 12 per cent of total sales in the second quarter as banks agreed to more sales at prices below the outstanding mortgage balance, RealtyTrac Inc said.

The proportion of sales of homes in default or scheduled for auction rose from 10 per cent a year earlier and was little changed from the first quarter, the Irvine, California-based information company said in a report. Most of those were short sales, or transactions for less than the mortgage debt, according to RealtyTrac.

An increase in short sales, along with a shorter average time to sell such homes and bigger discounts relative to normal deals, indicate the market is clearing distressed properties more efficiently, CEO James J. Saccacio said in the statement.

Total pre-foreclosure sales rose 19 per cent from the first quarter, while slipping 12 per cent from a year earlier, when a federal tax credit pumped up demand.

?This is a glimmer of hope that lenders are getting more realistic,? Rick Sharga, senior vice-president of RealtyTrac, said.

Who needs comedy with "30 Minutes or Less" worth of laughs? (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? You know the old saying about how pizza and sex are pretty good even when they're lousy?

Unfortunately, the rule doesn't apply to the pizza-guy-turned-bank-robber comedy "30 Minutes or Less," which remains a lazy and listless caper farce, despite the presence of comedy heavy-hitters like Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride and Aziz Ansari.

Eisenberg, unsuccessfully cast against type, stars as Nick, a slacker whose go-nowhere life revolves around smoking pot and delivering pizza for a shabby franchise that promises you'll get your pepperoni-and-cheese-thin-crust within half an hour.

One of his deliveries takes him to a construction site where two gorilla-masked men chloroform him and strap a bomb to his chest, telling him he's got nine hours to rob a bank.

The apes in question are Dwayne (McBride), a doofus who wants to raise money to hire a hit man to kill Dwayne's dad (Fred Ward) for his lottery winnings, and Travis (Nick Swardson), who, despite being Dwayne's submissive lackey, is the relative brainiac of the operation, thanks to his skill for making things like bombs and flamethrowers. (You could imagine Travis hanging out with the motorheads from "Bellflower.")

The only person to whom Nick can turn for help is Chet (Aziz Ansari), and that's a little awkward, since the two lifelong best friends stopped speaking to each other the night before. (Chet revealed he'd accidentally helped break up Nick's parents' marriage; Nick admitted he slept with Chet's twin sister Kate, played by Dilshad Vadsaria, the night of their high-school graduation.)

Despite the controversy erupting over the fact that "30 Minutes" may or may not be borrowing heavily from a tragic real-life incident, the film presents a farcical set-up that has the potential to be funny. And while we get an occasional a chuckle or two, this movie careens along lacking any wit or even momentum. (For a movie centered around a ticking time bomb, the pace is unforgivably slack.)

The only consistent laughs come from Michael Pe?a's eccentric hired killer, the movie's one character who seems like someone we haven't seen a million times before. Pe?a's off-kilter timing and funny vocal inflections make him the movie's high point, making his frequent absences from the action that much more disappointing.

Actresses like Halle Berry get a hard time for following up their Academy Award wins with dopey movies, so it's only fair to point out that Eisenberg's a follow-up to his Oscar-nominated role in "The Social Network" represents a significant dip in quality.

It's understandable, perhaps, that he'd want to reteam with his "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleisher, but this time Eisenberg's playing a much less interesting character -- and giving a much less interesting performance.

Ansari's manic comic energy peps up a handful of scenes, but the "Parks and Recreation" star handles his freak-out soliloquies (which probably provide more opportunities for improv) better than straightforward lines of expository dialogue, where he sometimes seems to be choking on the words.

Danny McBride, it may not shock you to learn, is playing an arrogant white-trash idiot who's all talk and bluster with nothing to back it up; in other words, the same role he's played in pretty much everything he's ever done.

Fleisher's directorial debut "Zombieland" succeeded precisely because it was such a clever spin on a tired genre the fact that Eisenberg's character had survived because of his anal-retentive attention to detail gave zombie movies a fresh, neurotic twist. (Featuring one of the great secret celebrity cameos of all time didn't hurt either.)

Fleisher does the exact opposite with "30 Minutes," populating the film with stale, flat, crushingly familiar characters. Much of the blame should go to writers Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan, granted, but Fleisher ploddingly puts these cardboard cut-outs through their paces.

The cinematography in a would-be goofy comedy is rarely worth mentioning, but it bears pointing out that director of photography Jess Hall sucks out what little joy "30 Minutes" might otherwise have. The dank, gloomy look of the film suggests an indie drama about urban depressives or a documentary about factory closures, not a ticking-clock caper farce.

There's at least one way that the audience will relate to these barely-there characters -- Eisenberg spends most of the movie looking at a digital clock to see how long he's got before he's released from an awful fate, and viewers will do likewise.
