APNewsBreak: Bus driver issues apology to victims (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? The driver of a tour bus that crashed in Utah and killed three Japanese tourists last year formally apologized to families of the dead Tuesday, saying he deeply regrets his actions.

"I have made a great error, deeply hurt others, and have brought sadness into your lives, by the lack of my thoughts and by the big mistakes I have made," Yasushi Mikuni wrote in the three-page letter written in Japanese. An English translation of the letter was provided to The Associated Press by his Las Vegas attorney Garrett Ogata.

"Even though almost a year has passed since that accident, the visions of the guests' happy smiles on the way to Zion (National Park), then the scene just after the accident and at the hospital, are still flashing across my mind every day," Mikuni wrote.

The bus carrying 14 Japanese tourists was headed from Nevada to national parks in Utah on Aug. 9, 2010, when it rolled on Interstate 15, about 250 miles south of Salt Lake City. Three died and 11 others were injured.

Utah Highway Patrol investigators said that on the day of the crash, Mikuni, a 26-year-old Japanese citizen living in Las Vegas on a U.S. work and education visa, was driving on little sleep after a long work day the day before. Tests showed he also had marijuana in his system. Investigators said they didn't believe Mikuni was impaired while driving, but that he was sleep-deprived.

Killed in the crash were Hiroki Hayase, 20, of Osaka, Japan; and Junji Hoshino, 38, and his wife, Junko Hoshino, 40, from Shinjuku, Japan.

Mikuni was originally charged with 10 state felonies, but in May pleaded guilty to just three felony counts. He faces up to 15 years in prison when sentenced Aug. 5.

Ogata said the letter to the families is similar to what Mikuni intends to tell the judge in Cedar City next month.

"I have been spending every day regretting very many things," Mikuni wrote. "The various means I could have taken to avoid the accident, my judgment, my naivety. ... I yearn for the answers and it always concludes with these same last thoughts ... Why did I live, why have I survived this way?"

Mikuni, who suffered just minor injuries, was driving for Sandy, Utah-based Canyon Transportation Inc. He picked up the group in Las Vegas for a four-day tour of Utah's national parks and the Grand Canyon, according to troopers and tour organizers.

The bus had stopped at Zion National Park and was en route to Bryce Canyon National Park when it crashed. Utah Highway Patrol troopers said he flew to Salt Lake City and drove the tour bus to Las Vegas ? about a seven-hour drive at the speed limit ? the day before the crash, then got less than seven hours of sleep.

In the letter, Mikuni writes that he wonders if the crash could have been avoided if he consumed more energy drinks, slept more, or avoided smoking marijuana. The letter says working as a tour operator was Mikuni's dream job and expresses surprise that his family and others continue to support him despite the shame that his actions have brought.

Mikuni expresses his regret repeatedly throughout the letter and says his heart is heavy. He writes that he wants to talk about the accident in hopes of preventing future crashes.

He also asks the families to grant him their permission to continue with his own life.

"No time will be able to heal the loss of loved family members and I also understand that whatever I am trying to do, nothing will be able to compensate the loss," he wrote.

In addition to the criminal penalties Mikuni faces, the Hayase family has filed a personal injury lawsuit against him and the travel companies tied to the trip. Attorneys for the family say the Hayases and their daughter were also injured in the crash and that Akemi Hayase's injuries left her a paraplegic.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified financial damages for pain and suffering, medical expenses and funeral costs.

A similar federal lawsuit filed last October by Kei and Mai Maeda, who were on an anniversary trip at the time of the crash, has been dismissed. Blame it on food coma. We're a little slow on the uptake (read coverage of yesterday's event at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel here, here, and here), but we have even more delicious food photos from Angeleno Magazine's 9th annual "To Live And Dine In L.A." food fete.

The event celebrated the release of this month's Restaurant Issue, which awards LA's best new chefs, restaurants, and do-gooders in the local food industry with the magazine's annual restaurant awards. All of the award winners (which included Chef Roy Choi for A-Frame and Chef Jordan Kahn from Red Medicine) represent the best of the city's burgeoning food scene and were on hand to pass out samples of their signature dishes. Huge portions (some plates weren't "tastes," they were appetizer-sized!), short lines, and a highly curated list of participating restaurants makes Angeleno's annual event one of LA's hottest tasting tickets.

William Shatner says success "eluded" him (Reuters)

SAN DIEGO (TheWrap) ? William Shatner, the man who will forever be known as Capt. Kirk, and he of seemingly healthy ego, had a confession to make at Comic-Con: He doesn't consider himself a success.

At the geekathon to plug his new project, "The Captains," he worked in a mention of his third autobiography and forthcoming album of cover songs themed to space exploration, "Seeking Major Tom."

Nonetheless, he noted, with a proper dose of gravitas, that a question about his success was inapt.

"It's always eluded me trying to find success," he said.

Shatner, whose Google+ account was briefly suspended, perhaps on suspicion a pretender had been using it, mentioned that he will cover "Bohemian Rhapsody" on his album.

"The Captains," a project funded by and debuting today on the striving multi-platform network Epix (a Paramount/Lionsgate/MGM consortium), straightforwardly features interviews with past commanders of the pop-culture's longtime favorite rocket ship. They include Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Chris Pine, Avery Brooks and Scott Bakula.

The latter two were present for a rather sedate panel discussion. Shatner told the audience that he initially had trouble coming up with the airfare to conduct his many one-on-one interviews for the project, until the head of the Canadian jet manufacturer Bombardier told him, "I'm an aeronautical engineer because of 'Star Trek.'"

Then the star began riding around in small jets, the Comic-Con crowd was left to imagine, like a Congressman on the take.

Bakula praised Shatner for putting his ego aside during interviews.

"He wasn't trying to be the star of this--just doing an interview," the star of the recently canceled "Men of a Certain Age" said.

Multiple exotic pets: twice as nice or double trouble? | iPetblog.net

Let?s face it, pets can be addictive. This is especially true of exotic pets. Who can have just one parakeet or just one ferret? Perhaps more than dog and cat owners, exotic pet owners tend to have multiples of the same pet species and often more than one species. While it may seem like a good idea to pick up two guinea pigs at the pet store because they?re both so cute, who could possibly decide which one to take home? They?ll probably much happier if they?re not alone, right? Still, it should be noted that having multiple pets may not always be the best decision. While in some instances, it is true that having more than one of the same pet species (a small flock of birds, a herd of rabbits, a colony of chinchillas, etc.)? may seem to provide companionship and comfort to the animal, it is not always best for their human caretakers and may not actually be best for the animals, either. Here are a few points to think about if you?re considering purchasing or adopting more than one exotic pet of any species:

1. SPACE ? Do you have the room to house more than exotic pet?

Many exotic pets have very specific requirements for housing, lighting, heat, and food that take up more space than that?of the average cat or dog. The requirements for varying species can be radically different. Plus, different exotic species cannot usually be housed together because of the potential for fighting, injury, etc. Before you run out and purchase more than one exotic pet, be sure that you have the space to properly care for all these animals.

2. TIME ? Do you have time to dedicate to more than one exotic animal?

To be properly socialized, many exotic pets (birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, and rodents, alike) need to be handled and worked with daily, not only when they are first purchased or adopted, but also on an ongoing basis. Before you consider having more than one pet that will require socialization, be sure you have time available to dedicate to each of them. While some people think that getting a ?playmate? for an exotic pet is the answer, not all pets necessarily want friends or roommates. Plus, the kind of socialization an exotic pet gets from being handled by a human cannot be substituted for by interaction with another un-socialized pet. To get a well-behaved, interactive animal, there is no substitution for regular human contact.

3. FINANCES ? Do you have the money to care for more than one exotic pet?

Many people forget the fact that all pets (even exotic ones) need regular medical care, and veterinary care, especially on an emergency basis, can be costly. If you double the number of pets you own, you double the cost of care. And if one gets sick with something infectious (parasites, a virus, etc.), the likelihood is that both may get sick and require treatment. So, unless you are independently wealthy, you might want to think twice about doubling up on the number of exotic pets you have, or you may find yourself scrimping on basic medical care for each of them.

4. BREEDING CONTROL ? How will you control unwanted breeding among your same-species pets?

There are 3 ways to ensure your same-species pets do not inbreed:

• Separate them by sex, and house them separately
• Own all only all males or all females
• Spay/neuter opposite sex pairs before housing them together

The problem is that not even same sex animals housed together are guaranteed to get along. Some same sex species will actually kill each other over territory, food, etc., when housed together. Be sure you think about this before buying that extra-large cage.

5. SPREAD OF DISEASE ? Are the different exotic species suited to live in close quarters?

Even if you don?t house your different species of exotic pets together, there are some species that can potentially spread disease to each other if they are living in the same air space. Take guinea pigs and rabbits, for example. Each one carries a respiratory tract bacterium that does not affect the species that carries it but that can be spread to the other species through the air. Good reason not to house guinea pigs and rabbits in close proximity, don?t you think? Many pet owners aren?t aware of these little known facts until their pets are ill.

The point is, before you decide that since one exotic pet is fun, more than one will be even more fun, there are a lot of factors to consider. While we may like company, many exotic pets may not. And even if they are found in large groups in the wild, the same groupings may not be appropriate in captivity, because these pets have not necessarily been raised together. So, before you buy twice, be smart, and think twice.

Latest developments in debt ceiling standoff (AP)

Congress has until Aug. 2 to raise the federal borrowing limit or the government will run out of money and possibly default on its debt. House Republicans say they won't raise the debt limit without equal spending cuts. President Barack Obama and Democrats insist that higher revenues must be included.

Monday's developments: Obama says the two sides are "making progress" in negotiations. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., says the Senate will meet each day until the issue is resolved.

What's Next: Republican House to vote Tuesday on bill to cut and cap spending and require that Congress pass a balanced budget amendment before the debt ceiling can be raised. While the bill is unlikely to pass the Democratic Senate, Obama threatens to veto it.

Q: What is the debt ceiling?

A: It's a legal limit on how much debt the government can accumulate. The government takes on debt two ways: It borrows money from investors by issuing Treasury bonds, and it borrows from itself, mostly from the Social Security trust fund, which comes from payroll taxes. Congress created the debt limit in 1917. It's unique to the United States. Most countries let their debts rise automatically when government spending outpaces tax revenue. Congress has increased the debt limit 10 times since 2001.

This titillating yet controversial topic was among the latest themes of the Tayuan Mo at Panindigan of TV5, among the rising PH media programs on public service talk shows (news & information category). The program just opened this year 2011, and already its informative yet entertaining format has been attracting viewers from diverse sectors, including the intelligentsia.

I was again invited by the program management to guest in the Tayuan stint. The henpecked husband episode was hosted by Aida Uy, Giselle Sanchez, and Jojo Alajar. The thematic discussion focused on socio-psychological factors, notably personality, causing the henpecked husband phenomenon.

Asked whether personality indeed factors into the asymmetry of marriage, I opined affirmatively that such is the fact. Wives who are Choleric personality in make up?strong personality, leader-organizer, stern, commander?will tend to be on top of the marital chain of command. CNN's Piers Morgan denies role in UK hacking scandal (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? CNN talk show host and former News of the World editor Piers Morgan on Tuesday angrily denied claims by a British lawmaker that he had taken part in phone hacking during his years as a journalist in Britain.

Morgan, who hosts the U.S. nightly talk and current affairs show "Piers Morgan Tonight," said he may have been a victim of hacking but that he had never hacked a phone himself.

"That MP (member of parliament) just claimed I boasted in my book of using phone-hacking for a scoop," Morgan said on Twitter during Tuesday's hearing by a British parliamentary panel in London on the scandal engulfing newspapers in Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation empire.

"Complete nonsense. Just read the book," Morgan tweeted. "I've never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, or published any stories based on the hacking of a phone."

Morgan, who edited the now-defunct News of The World in 1994-1995, was responding to remarks by British MP Louise Mensch at Tuesday's televised grilling of Rupert and James Murdoch, which was seen around the world.

Mensch stated that Morgan had boasted in his 2005 book "The Insider: The Private Diaries of a Scandalous Decade" of having won a scoop for his Daily Mirror tabloid newspaper by using a code to gain entry into another person's cell phone.

Morgan said Mensch had got her facts mixed up.

In the book, he wrote that he suspected he was a victim of phone hacking. "I wrote in my book that someone warned me phones could be hacked, so I changed my pin number."

Morgan, who said little during the first two weeks of the phone hacking scandal in Britain, said on his show on Monday that he did not believe that any story published in either the News of The World or The Daily Mirror under his editorship was obtained by unlawful means.

He also defended Rupert Murdoch, saying that he found it "impossible, personally knowing the man, to believe that he would have known about law-breaking on his newspapers, let alone would he condone it."

Morgan, 46, also worked on Murdoch's daily newspaper The Sun between 1989-94 before moving to The News of the World and then The Daily Mirror in London from 1995-2004.

He took over veteran Larry King's slot on CNN in January 2011 and is also a judge on the TV show "America's Got Talent".

Yi-jun escorted Cristal over to a stretch white limousine and past the stunning brunette driver with legs that just went on forever as she held the door open for them.

?Thank you, Beatrice,? Yi-jun said to the young woman. ?Take us to Hotel Ritz.?

?Oui,? Beatrice replied.

He said something else to her in French that made Beatrice chuckle and close the door. She walked around and climbed into the front seat. ?Take the scenic route.? He lifted the partition and snuggled back into the seat.

Cristal secured the seatbelt across her shoulder and waist. If he was trying to impress her he?d done that by not attacking her while she slept aboard the plane. Anything else would just be a waste of time. She was only there for the interview and to cover the fashion show?nothing else.

Yi-jun reached over and touched a couple of buttons. Soulful French music filtered out through the speakers, and an ice bucket containing a frosty bottle of wine and two glasses appeared between their seats. He handed her one of the glasses, popped the cork and filled her glass before filling his.

?Isn?t it a bit early for wine?? she asked as he made a toast.

?Not in Paris,? he responded pronouncing it like the natives with a hint of Korean accent.

Cristal sipped. It was the good stuff. He was using the big artillery. ?Thanks.?

?You?re welcome.? He sipped from his glass.

?I don?t know about anyone else, but yes, I do like to travel in style.? He paused. ?You don?t like it??

Oh, well she guessed she could do that. Cheese, she thought giving it her best effort. Did his eyes flicker when she smiled? It made him look wicked sexy.

Cristal bit her bottom lip to keep from smiling. The great Yi-jun was admitting that he wasn?t perfect. ?Do you have any other weaknesses??

?A foot freak. Groovy.? He tried to refill her glass a third time but she stopped him. ?Two is my limit before breakfast.?

?A wise decision. I will stop too to save room for the scrumptious breakfast awaiting us after we cheek into our hotel room.?

Cristal raised an eyebrow. ?I hope you just omitted the ?s? of that last word by accident.?

He smiled smugly. ?Just checking to see if you were awake. Yes, we have two rooms.? He chuckled. ?You can?t blame a man for trying.?

?Yes, I can.? She emptied he glass and put it back into the compartment. ?Do you always take women on fancy trips??

Yi-jun put his empty glass back next to hers. ?No, you?re the first.?

She eyed him suspiciously. ?How come I don?t believe you??

?I can?t answer that. For some reason you have this pre-conceived idea of what my life is like.?

?Let me see, if I have it down. You?re a young, gorgeous movie star with enough money to do anything you choose to do with it. You?re rich, spoiled and surround yourself with beautiful and expensive toys. You date one specific type of woman, big-bobbed and empty-headed ones that look good on your arm walking down the red carpet, but who aren?t smart enough to know that they?re only there to make you look good.?

Jenell Williams Paris's The End of Sexual Identity seeks to overturn the power that sexual identity labels ? homosexual and heterosexual ? have in and outside the church.

In the past few months, I couldn?t help noticing the flurry of articles about the PCUSA?s decision to ordain people in same-sex relationships, the repeal of the military?s Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell policy, the passage of same-sex marriage laws in New York, and the decision of Chaz Bono, daughter of Sonny and Cher, to become a man.

Yet conversations about sex and sexual identity emerge as often around our dinner tables as on the front page of the paper. Recently, a pastor told me about a married member of his congregation who routinely cheats on his wife with other men. A friend described helping a female friend pick out an engagement ring so she could propose to her girlfriend. Another friend sat at our dinner table and talked about leaving the church after years of celibacy because he couldn?t deny his gay identity. Jenell Williams Paris, an anthropology and sociology professor at Messiah College, seeks to enter this cultural conversation in her new book, The End of Sexuality: Why Sex Is Too Important to Define Who We Are (InterVarsity Press). Moreover, Paris seeks to change the conversation within the church. Her analysis of contemporary culture offers a helpful aid to Christians trying to wade through the complex issues surrounding gender and sexuality in the modern age.

Paris does not want to overturn centuries of traditional Christian doctrine about sexuality, singleness, and marriage. Rather, she wants Christians to understand the manner in which we have capitulated to our culture, and then she wants to help churches create communities that offer a better way for all people, regardless of sexual experience, desire, or practice. To begin that new way, Paris insists we reclaim our core identity as God?s beloved rather than identify ourselves according to sexual preferences, either heterosexual or homosexual, which are relatively modern labels. Paris writes, ?All sexual identity categories have a common trouble; they tell us that what a person wants, sexually, is an important measure of who a person is.? The same could be said for other identity categories, be they ethnic, racial, economic, or related to ability and disability. As Christians, first and foremost we know ourselves as members of the body of Christ, as new creations by the power and work of the Spirit of God. Only as we recognize this truth about ourselves and about our sisters and brothers can conversations about sexual practice proceed in a constructive way.

Despite her critique of sexual identity categories, Paris does not seek to overturn traditional biblical understandings of sex and sexuality. She calls herself a ? ?sex only within marriage between a man and a woman? kind of Christian,? and she acknowledges, ?God did create humans male and female. But sin has influenced every dimension of human life . . . .? She upholds a biblical understanding of creation, sin, and redemption, although she might have spent more time examining the theological significance of being created ?male and female, in the image of God.? Paris approaches the Genesis passage from a sociological standpoint, but she needs to provide an exegetical lens as well. Furthermore, she is so concerned about questioning the cultural construction of sexual identity that she fails to thoroughly discuss the Bible?s understanding of masculinity and femininity.

Paris asserts that reclaiming our core identity enables us to eliminate a hierarchy of ?heterosexual? and ?homosexual? within the church. Only then can we begin conversations about holiness in general and sexual holiness in particular. She writes, ?In post-sexual identity Christian communities, sexual holiness becomes a common standard for all believers. Same-sex attraction and behavior still matter, but not as identity-constituting characteristics and not as points of theological disagreement that warrant separation or exclusion.? Sexual holiness, according to Paris, includes celibacy for people who experience same-sex attraction as well as for people who are unmarried and attracted to someone of the opposite sex. And rather than call for individuals to repent, be they individuals who have participated in same-sex sex or individuals who have condemned and judged others, Paris instead calls for cultural renewal throughout the church.

Paris suggests that celibacy is not currently ?plausible? because there are very few ways to experience intimacy without sex in contemporary culture, even within the church. She upholds an ideal of celibacy that exists with institutional and relational support: ?Long-term celibacy becomes plausible when there are widely held values, positive language, meaningful social roles and real social support for celibates.? Unfortunately, she doesn?t offer specific examples of communities ? past or present ? in which such support has existed. And she could spend more time examining the theological significance of Jesus and Paul and other New Testament figures who live holy and full lives as celibate persons.

The End of Sexual Identity could use more theology to balance out its anthropological focus. Nevertheless, Paris upholds a Christian understanding of who we are as human beings while offering a critique of the church for its appropriation of modern cultural categories that create false power structures and divisions.

Which brings me back to the headlines and dinner conversations of late. Paris?s book offers hope that the church might become a refuge for people who have been marginalized by cultural assumptions about sex. Instead of supporting divisions, The End of Sexual Identity reminds readers that identity is bestowed upon us by God, not by our sexuality. It rebukes me for my participation in the divisions created by sexual identity categories. And it helps me consider ways to support and equip single people as meaningful members of our church community. Paris herself doesn?t go this far, but her book also reminds me that ? even when it involves self-denial, even when it involves countercultural lifestyles ? God?s way of holiness is good for all people. It reminds me that the way of holiness is the way of love.
