Awkward Moments | Laugh With Us Blog

By EstherIrish, on May 31st, 2012

I wanted to get out of the house for Memorial Day.? My niece Andrea has been staying with me for about two weeks.? Andrea and my sister Miriam and her little boy all joined us at the park.? We were able to visit a little while all the kids played.? When everyone began getting hungry and thirsty we loaded up and drove to the near by In-N-Out.

By the time we walked in I was completely frazzled.? The kids were running all over the place.? I thought I should take them to find tables.? Grabbing the hand of the child nearest to me with one hand and swinging Bobby around in his car seat with the other I half shouted to Jason, ?You?re ordering for all of us right?? We?ll just go sit down.?? He looked at me kind of strange.? Right about then several men walked in behind us.? One of the men said something to me and laughed.? I had no idea what he had said so I asked him to repeat it.? He said it again and then the other two men laughed.? That?s when I noticed one of the guys looked familiar.? ?Oh hi!?? I said to them all still not catching on to their joke or what ever was funny.

I got everyone situated and firmly planted on chairs.? Whew.? I took a deep breath.? Then I looked at Andrea who was sitting in front of me and said, more loudly than I intended, ?I have absolutely no idea what those men were saying to me.? Do you??? Then out of the corner of my eye I realized that one of the men was sitting right in front of me.?I wanted to crawl into a very deep hole!? So embarrassing!? I looked up and saw my husband talking to the other two.? Then it hit me.? I knew exactly who these people were.? Of course.? They go to our church and while I?ve talked to them before, I?m much more familiar with the women of the family who unfortunately for me happened not to be present on this day.

___________________________________________________________________________________

I would like to recognize my community leaders for May.? This has been an especially busy month for me with a road trip and company staying with me.? Extra thanks to my leaders who did a great job while I?ve been away.? (Leaders? beliefs and/or opinions do not necessarily reflect those of LaughWithUsBlog.)? I?d love for you to visit their blogs!

Shari is a midlife Christian stay at home mom and Grandmother.? She blogs about faith, parenting, step parenting, grand parenting, gardening, cooking, blended families, addiction, product reviews and everything in between.? Here is one of her posts that made me laugh: Vacation Planning: Destination Hobo Hotel.? That would happen to me!

Mari writes at Life in our Castle.? She says she writes strictly for fun and whenever she feels inspired.

Michelle writes about all things green, and we?re not talking Irish!? Her blogs are very informative and well written.? Here she gave a very simple recipe for natural deodorant:? Health Benefits of Using Natural Deodorants.

Delusional Paris Hilton Determined to Make New Album a Smash Hit

Paris Hilton might not want to quit her day job ... whatever that is.

Even with THG plugging it, her Oxygen reality show was canceled for abysmal ratings. You know it's bad when that happens. Now the former reality TV star decided to focus all her "career comeback" efforts on releasing a second album.

Breath? Probably shouldn't be held.

Paris Whitney Hilton

As we previously reported, Paris and Kim Kardashian are "cool" with each other ... on the surface. But she still can't believe her one-time BFF's level of fame.

After all, Paris wrote the book on getting railed on tape and turning it into nonstop celebrity gossip attention and millions of dollars. Kim just did her one better.

Or five, or 10 better. In any case, Kim is all the rage these days, while Paris' first album sold only 197,000 copies at the PEAK of her popularity in 2006.

Think the second one's going to do better?

"Paris has been working with Flo Rida, LMFAO, and David Guetta, and the album should be released this summer," says a source, anonymously of course.

"She has a lot riding on this project because her last reality show was canceled, and she needs to do something to re-invent herself. Paris is hoping to appeal to a broader fan base and would love to use the album as a platform for a possible project with MTV."

Whatever the odds of that are, bet against it.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia researchers shed light on genetic disorders tied to cohesin protein malfunction

Researchers studying rare genetic disorders have uncovered insights into those diseases in biological structures that regulate chromosomes when cells divide. Focusing on the cohesin complex, a group of proteins forming a bracelet that encircles chromosome pairs, scientists have discovered mutations that disrupt cohesin, causing a recently recognized class of diseases called cohesinopathies.

"We are learning more about how these genetic abnormalities that affect cohesin play a role in human development," said study leader Matthew A. Deardorff, M.D., Ph.D., a specialist in pediatric genetics at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Center for Cornelia deLange Syndrome and Related Diagnoses.

The research, carried out in children, cell cultures, and zebrafish, appeared May 24 in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Deardorff's co-study leader was Frank J. Kaiser, Ph.D., of the University of Lubeck in Germany.

The cohesin complex is already known to be involved in Cornelia deLange syndrome (CdLS), a multisystem genetic disease affecting an estimated 1 in 10,000 children. The disease has a range of severity, but classically includes mental retardation, impaired growth, heart defects, feeding problems, deformed arms and hands, and distinctive facial features.

Researchers at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia previously were the first to discover gene mutations that cause CdLS, including forms of the disease with mental retardation and often severe limb abnormalities. The current study identified another gene, RAD21, that when mutated, causes very mild cognitive and physical impairments.

The study team first performed a genome-wide analysis of 101 children with typical CdLS and 189 children having overlapping features of the disease. None of the children had mutations in the three genes already known to cause CdLS. They identified a six-year-old boy with a deletion in a section of chromosome 8 that contains the RAD21 gene, which was known to express a cohesin protein but not previously known to cause disease. As an infant, the boy had been diagnosed with facial features similar to those of CdLS, and subsequently experienced growth retardation, but had normal cognitive development.

The researchers then focused on three additional children with deletions in RAD21 and two children with mutations within the gene, and found a similar patternphysical features, such as short stature and distinctive facial features, overlapping with some of those seen in cohesin disorders, but with only minor cognitive delays. "These findings suggest that children who are very mildly affected may go undiagnosed," said Deardorff.

The research team did further studies in cell cultures and a zebrafish model to investigate molecular mechanisms involved in cohesin disorders. The cohesin complex includes four proteins that join in a bracelet-like structure that surrounds sister chromatids, the identical pairs that result from chromosome duplication prior to cell division. RAD21, the protein expressed by the gene with the same name, forms a clasp that closes the bracelet. A mutated RAD21 gene weakens that clasp, impairing cohesion's normal abilities to repair damage to DNA.

However, Deardorff added, the lab research does not currently explain the full sequence of molecular events, and further studies will investigate knowledge gaps in the process.

As the cost of whole-genome sequencing is rapidly dropping, Deardorff expects researchers to discover additional genes involved in cohesinopathies, offering further clues to how these diseases function in human development. "For now we can expect that patients with the RAD21 mutation will be less severely affected than those with classical CdLS," he said. "As we better understand the mechanisms of these congenital diseases, we'll continue to seek opportunities to devise more effective treatments."

Engineered microvessels provide a 3-D test bed for human diseases

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Mice and monkeys don't develop diseases in the same way that humans do. Nevertheless, after medical researchers have studied human cells in a Petri dish, they have little choice but to move on to study mice and primates.

University of Washington bioengineers have developed the first structure to grow small human blood vessels, creating a 3-D test bed that offers a better way to study disease, test drugs and perhaps someday grow human tissues for transplant.

The findings are published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"In clinical research you just draw a blood sample," said first author Ying Zheng, a UW research assistant professor of bioengineering. "But with this, we can really dissect what happens at the interface between the blood and the tissue. We can start to look at how these diseases start to progress and develop efficient therapies."

Zheng first built the structure out of the body's most abundant protein, collagen, while working as a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University. She created tiny channels and injected this honeycomb with human endothelial cells, which line human blood vessels.

During a period of two weeks, the endothelial cells grew throughout the structure and formed tubes through the mold's rectangular channels, just as they do in the human body.

When brain cells were injected into the surrounding gel, the cells released chemicals that prompted the engineered vessels to sprout new branches, extending the network. A similar system could supply blood to engineered tissue before transplant into the body.

After joining the UW last year, Zheng collaborated with the Puget Sound Blood Center to see how this research platform would work to transport real blood.

The engineered vessels could transport human blood smoothly, even around corners. And when treated with an inflammatory compound the vessels developed clots, similar to what real vessels do when they become inflamed.

The system also shows promise as a model for tumor progression. Cancer begins as a hard tumor but secretes chemicals that cause nearby vessels to bulge and then sprout. Eventually tumor cells use these blood vessels to penetrate the bloodstream and colonize new parts of the body.

When the researchers added to their system a signaling protein for vessel growth that's overabundant in cancer and other diseases, new blood vessels sprouted from the originals. These new vessels were leaky, just as they are in human cancers.

"With this system we can dissect out each component or we can put them together to look at a complex problem. That's a nice thing -- we can isolate the biophysical, biochemical or cellular components. How do endothelial cells respond to blood flow or to different chemicals, how do the endothelial cells interact with their surroundings, and how do these interactions affect the vessels' barrier function? We have a lot of degrees of freedom," Zheng said.

The system could also be used to study malaria, which becomes fatal when diseased blood cells stick to the vessel walls and block small openings, cutting off blood supply to the brain, placenta or other vital organs.

"I think this is a tremendous system for studying how blood clots form on vessels walls, how the vessel responds to shear stress and other mechanical and chemical factors, and for studying the many diseases that affect small blood vessels," said co-author Dr. Jos? L?pez, a professor of biochemistry and hematology at UW Medicine and chief scientific officer at the Puget Sound Blood Center.

Future work will use the system to further explore blood vessel interactions that involve inflammation and clotting. Zheng is also pursuing tissue engineering as a member of the UW's Center for Cardiovascular Biology and the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine.

Other co-authors are UW physics senior Samuel Totorica; Abraham Stroock, Michael Craven, Nak Won Choi, Michael Craven, Anthony Diaz-Santana and Claudia Fischbach at Cornell; Junmei Chen at the Puget Sound Blood Center; and Barbara Hempstead at Weill Cornell Medical College.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Human Frontier Science Program and Cornell University. ###

Montana Revises University Sex Assault Investigation Policies

HAVRE, Mont. ? Montana?s university system moved forward Friday with a new policy for handling sexual assaults. The policy change follows a U.S. Justice Department investigation into the way the University of Montana responded to sexual assault and harassment reports.

The U.S. Justice Department investigation ?which began earlier this month ?prompted a second investigation by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights, the Associated Press reports. The university has come under fire in the past two years for mishandling rape cases, particularly those that involved football team members.

E-mails recently obtained by the press show that the University of Montana Vice President Jim Foley sought to punish a student for speaking publicly about how the university was handling her rape case.

The Board of Regents signed a new policy Friday aiming to ensure compliance with the Montana Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex.

Counselling for LGBT People in Stockholm: 5 Reasons to Choose a ...

Rainbow IllustrationWhen expats move to their new country, it can be an opportunity to make a new start. Sweden, with its relatively inclusive attitudes to lesbians and gay men, would seem like a natural choice for gay expats hoping to live their identity more openly. But coming out is often more of an ongoing process than a point in time.

?

LGBT expats in Sweden experience the same difficulties as other immigrants with adjusting to Swedish culture, climate and maintaining relationships. But some aspects of the transition to Nordic life are often unexpected. it?s been suggested that the ?Law of Jante? has Swedes downplaying differences in favour of viewing everyone as equals. And living in a city such as Stockholm where being gay or lesbian is generally not regarded as anything unusual might also mean that it is harder to get acknowledgement of personal experiences of coming out as a gay man or lesbian. One way of getting this recognition is to speak to a counselling therapist who is understanding and supportive of gay identity.

Coming Out

Coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is often discussed as if it was an event. But it is more likely to be an ongoing process or something that continues through life. Some would say that we never stop coming out. Even in Sweden, we have a society where the heterosexuality is still the considered the norm and the assumption that a person is straight often goes unquestioned. This assumption is part of what has been called ?Heteronormativity?, a way of thinking that also suggests people fall into distinct genders (man and woman) associated with specific gender roles. The reality of life is, of course, quite different. Humans are as diverse as other species so biologically, sexually, gender-wise and with identity, there is much variation.

Making the decision to share your identity with others is a personal choice and needs to be treated as such. At the same time, the relief that often comes with inviting others into your life can often reduce anxiety and free up creativity. Talking about who you are and having an audience for your experiences is personally validating. Being able to be yourself around others can be one of the rewarding aspects of living in Sweden that might be harder to achieve in certain other places in the world.

Coming Out Later in Life / Gay and Married

For people who are older, coming out can be particularly challenging. I have spoken with many men who have decided, after years of marriage to a woman or having raised children, to explore other aspects of their sexuality and identity. Starting to identify as gay, bisexual or trans in your 40s, 50s or later can seem like entering a new world and an unknown world at that. If you are in this situation, it can be important to remember that you already know a lot about life even if the ?world? you are entering seems to have its own set of rules or conventions. Coming out after a straight relationship or later in life is a journey in itself. It can be helpful to have a gay counsellor to assist you to navigate the way forward.

Gay Relationship issues

Many of the people who consult with me at my practice at Fridhemsplan or online are going through couples counselling, have recently ended a relationship or are dealing with the aftermath of a break-up. It?s quite usual to have a difficult time when a relationship ends, and upset feelings can continue, especially when the end was unexpected or you had been with your partner for a long time. If you are gay, lesbian or transgender, it can be therapeutic to talk about the feelings and to find a way forward with the help of a professional.

For gay people, finding a partner in a ?heteronormative? world is not always easy. Gay Internet dating has become one of the most common ways to look for and find love but some argue that it has turned people into commodities that are marketed. Not everyone finds it easy to ?sell? themselves to others over the net. In Stockholm there are a few gay venues, social groups and sports organisations. And many people meet their partners through work or friendship networks. Taking the first step or returning to dating after a break might involve some effort and motivation, not to mention support.

Family Relationships

Lesbian and gay expats in Stockholm and elsewhere in Sweden, even those who have settled into life here, sometimes have unresolved family issues that may or may not be related to their sexuality. In terms of sexuality, it can help to know as much as possible about being gay and gay life in case the time comes when questions are asked. Family members can take time to adjust to a new understanding about their loved ones and people tend to learn acceptance at their own pace anyway. Some people struggling with certain family relationships find that geographic distance can be both a blessing as well as a barrier to resolution. Having the ?sounding board? of a gay therapist might make a difference when exploring options.

Dealing with Workplace Homophobia

I?ve just attended the Nordic LGBT Business Leadership Forum, an event organised in Stockholm by IBM to promote discussion about how organisations can maximise the power of diversity in the workplace and translate it to success in the marketplace. Companies based in Sweden are generally much more inclusive of transgender, lesbian and gay employees than in other countries but that doesn?t mean homophobia in the workplace does not exist here. Dealing with workplace harassment or simply feeling at ease with your colleagues can be dependant on a number of factors and it is important not to blame yourself if you feel uncomfortable. If your job is stressing you out, make an appointment to talk about it and get it off your chest so that you can work out what to do.

Finally, it is common for people to wait to come to see me until the point comes that they feel really bad about things. My advice is to act now instead of waiting. Often when you start discussing problems with a therapist, difficulties do start resolving themselves.

Counselling in English in Stockholm has advantages and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are always welcome at Forward Therapy Stockholm. Just contact me by email or leave a clear message on 08-559 22 636 if you are interested in meeting at my office, walking talk-therapy or online counselling.

Scots begin push to be a nation once again

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - With rousing speeches, patriotic music and support from actor Sean Connery, supporters of independence for Scotland launched a campaign on Friday which they hope will lead to the demise of a 305-year-old union with England and the breakup of Britain.

"This is the beginning of something really special - the beginning of the campaign to restore nationhood to Scotland," Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), told hundreds of supporters in hall in the capital Edinburgh.

"We want a Scotland that is fairer and more prosperous."

The campaign hopes to tap into a blend of historical rivalry, different political tastes, and a perception that the British parliament in London does not safeguard Scotland's interests to win a referendum in 2014 which would pave the way for full independence two years later.

If successful, the drive could create serious problems for Britain, which comprises England, Scotland and Wales (Britain is in turn part of the United Kingdom which also includes Northern Ireland).

With its kilts and tartans, bagpipes and whisky, Scotland has a distinctive, if romanticized, culture. There has also been darker history of poverty, violence and ill health, notably in the largest city Glasgow, once an engine of the British Empire.

Scotland already has many of the trappings of an independent nation such as its own flag, sports teams, and a history of achievements in science and literature.

Britain's current government, a coalition between the Conservative party and the Liberal Democrat party, is opposed to Scottish independence as is the opposition Labor party. Britain is stronger as a union, they argue, and an independent Scotland might struggle on Europe's fringes.

The SNP's Salmond, speaking in front of a giant screen showing a cloud-flecked blue sky, had no such doubts.

He said his aim was to get one million Scots to sign the "Yes Declaration" before the referendum.

CONNERY SUPPORT

Under a devolved system of government, the Scottish parliament created in 1999 controls health, education and prisons while the British government in London controls everything else including foreign policy and defense.

"If the parliament can run education, why can't we run the economy? And if we can protect our old people why can't we protect ourselves without the obscenity of nuclear weapons?" Salmond told the audience.

The launch event drew on rousing patriotic music and a film showing the country's stunning Highland landscapes, fishermen, universities, and, inevitably, leaping kilt-clad dancers.

It also relied on celebrity endorsement. A message of support was read out from actor Sean Connery, an Edinburgh milkman before he found fame as secret agent James Bond.

Hollywood actor Brian Cox called Scotland's current predicament "centralized servitude" and related how like many Scots, he had become disenchanted by previous Labor governments led by former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

"The parliament at Westminster can see no further then the end of its own bridge," he said.

Scotland's national poet Liz Lochhead read out a poem focused on English-Scottish rivalry in the 16th Century.

Opinion polls show that around 40 percent of Scottish people are sympathetic to independence, with around 10 percent undecided and the remaining 50 percent opposed. South of the border in England, polls show people are largely apathetic.

Author Harry Reid said the referendum's success may hinge on whether the Labor party, traditionally popular in Scotland, can revive its fortunes.

Scotland is more inclined to vote for the left, whereas English voters have voted in much larger numbers for the right, underscoring a political fault line between north and south.

Although the Conservative party won more votes than any other party at the last British general election in 2010 it won only one parliamentary seat in Scotland.

One joke doing the rounds since two Chinese pandas took up residence in Edinburgh Zoo notes that there are now more pandas in Scotland than Conservative MPs.

DIMINISHED ROLE?

Scotland's preference for a more centre-left brand of politics which favors egalitarianism over the free market is reflected in education policy. In England, students have to pay large tuition fees to attend university, whereas in Scotland such education remains free for Scots.

Reid said disenchanted Labor voters who switched to the SNP in disgust at Labor's support for U.S. foreign policy in Iraq and Afghanistan may yet return to the fold. If they do, Scotland's dreams of independence could evaporate, he said.

"If we're going to get a decent Labor government back in 2015 people might wonder whether they really need independence."

Despite its relatively small population of just over five million, compared to England's population of just over 52 million, there are also fears that a 'yes' vote would diminish Britain's voice on the world stage.

"The rest of the world would be surprised and shocked that the UK was unable to hold together," Professor John Curtice of the University of Strathclyde told Reuters in a phone interview.

Britain would find it harder to maintain its voice at international bodies such as at the U.N. Security Council as well as in European Union decision-making.

There are also questions about whether Britain would be able to keep its nuclear submarine fleet in Scotland, where it now based. And revenues from Scottish North Sea oil remain important to its coffers.

But history runs deep and, symbolically, the independence referendum will be held on the 700th anniversary of the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn when an army commanded by England's King Edward II was defeated by a smaller force led by Robert the Bruce, a source of enduring pride for Scottish patriots.

Scotland and England have shared a monarch since 1603 and have been ruled by one single parliament in London since 1707. The SNP's Salmond has said an independent Scotland would retain Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch.

Pet Travel On The Rise - PawNation

It's no surprise to The Jet Set Pets to read that pet travel is on the rise. Dogs in particular are traveling more than ever, according to a survey released by PetRelocation.com.

PetRelocation.com, an international pet travel and pet transportation service provider, announced the results of its third annual Summer Pet Travel Survey. For 2012, travel trends have fluctuated, but overall the popularity of pet travel is holding steady and consumer demands are more specific than ever.

Nearly Half of Pet Owners Will Travel This Summer

47 percent of respondents said they planned to travel with their pets within the next three months, and another 40 percent plan to travel within the next year.

Dogs Rule (Even More)

Though about a quarter of the people said they travel with their cats, a commanding 85 percent will bring their dogs along when they hit the road in 2012. In 2011, 58 percent said they traveled with dogs and 22 percent with cats.

Pet Owners Want More Pet-Friendly Hotels

When it comes to prohibitive factors, 40 percent said there aren't enough pet-friendly hotels to choose from. Hotel fees and an inadequate amount of pet-friendly airlines were also singled out as the most difficult parts of pet travel (each of these was cited by 17 percent of people). About 12 percent of respondents said they found airline pet fees to be too high, down significantly from 18 percent last year and 38 percent in 2010.

Safety Tops the List

For the third year in a row, safety was cited as the number one priority for pet travelers, with 60 percent of respondents saying it is their top concern when making travel plans. Convenience came in second place at 25 percent, and pricing was stated as the number one concern for 15 percent of people.

Pets as Deciding Factors

An overwhelming 90 percent of people said they would change their travel plans to better accommodate their pets, and more than half (57 percent) would choose a hotel based on its pet-friendly features.

Pacers, Heat respond to Bird's 'soft' comment

MIAMI (AP) ? Larry Bird called the Indiana Pacers soft. His team agreed. LeBron James thought otherwise.

Bird told The Indianapolis Star early Wednesday that he "can't believe my team went soft" after the Pacers were beaten 115-83 in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series Tuesday night against the Miami Heat.

Miami leads the series 3-2, with Game 6 on Thursday in Indianapolis.

Tuesday's game in Miami was marred by three flagrant fouls ? one committed by Indiana's Tyler Hansbrough against Dwyane Wade, another by Miami's Udonis Haslem against Hansbrough moments after Wade was bloodied. The last was a particularly hard play by Heat reserve center Dexter Pittman against the Pacers' Lance Stephenson in the final seconds.

"I agree with his assessment. We did play soft," Indiana's Danny Granger said Wednesday. "We got smacked around. We got beat up, we got bullied, and we really didn't respond well.

"I've been with Larry since I've been in Indiana for seven years," Granger added. "He's not been one to hold his tongue, and 99 percent of the time what he's saying is right. I think he just called out what everyone else saw. We played a soft game. We didn't play with the playoff intensity that we needed to win."

Granger was in flip-flops when Wednesday's practice ended, saying the left ankle he sprained in Game 5 was still painful. Stephenson, who had X-rays taken to rule out any fractures to his collarbone or shoulder areas, did not practice.

"In my mind, I'm going to play," Granger said. "Elimination game, I have to play."

Vogel sounded concerned, but optimistic.

"Very much hoping he'll be available tomorrow," Vogel said. "He's a gamer. I'm thinking he'll play. But his ankle's pretty bad, so we'll see."

The Heat had a different reaction to Bird's comments. With the Pacers facing a win-or-else game Thursday, James thought Bird ? recently announced as the league's executive of the year ? wanted to provide extra incentive for Indiana.

"He's just trying to amp them up. That's all. That's all it is," James said. "He knows his team isn't soft. But with them, with their backs against the wall at this point, he knows what he's doing. He's not the executive of the year for no reason."

All three of the flagrant fouls called Tuesday were category-1, meaning no players were automatically ejected. The league has a wide range of options available for its review process, including upgrading those fouls to category-2. The NBA could also issue fines and suspensions.

"I expect they will. That game was nationally televised," Granger said. "A lot of people saw the plays. I think they have to."

The NBA had made no public comment before either team finished practices Wednesday.

"All the chatter and all the stuff, it'll still end up being decided between the lines," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "And it'll be decided by the rules of the game."

Wade sounded somewhat amused that Granger ? who's been whistled for three technicals in the series ? was one of the Pacers suggesting Haslem and Pittman should be suspended. Wade and Granger have had words during the series.

"We're not in here crying about the fouls," Wade said. "They fouled us. ... We're moving on to Game 6. We're not going to worry about what happened in Game 5. For us, it's about moving forward."

There were a number of other hard fouls in Game 5 that were not considered flagrant but continued the trend of what's become a physical series. Indiana forward David West ? who left Tuesday's game with what the team called a sprained knee, though he insisted Wednesday he was not hurt ? took exception to a play where he was knocked backward, saying a Heat player fell into his knee.

Not long afterward, he fouled James, who said he saw it coming.

"He was the one on the floor and I was the one still standing," James said. "So I started laughing at that. But he tried to get me."

Indiana coach Frank Vogel called Miami floppers before the series started, and it's been gritty throughout. The teams combined to shoot 66 free throws in Game 1, and there have been a combined nine technicals and flagrants called in the four games since. Other dustups included Stephenson making a choke sign that television cameras caught during Game 3, and Juwan Howard confronting him about his antics before Game 4.

"It's been a physical series, started by them," Wade said.

The Pacers practiced in Miami before flying home Wednesday, a somewhat uncommon move but one that Vogel wanted in an effort to keep his team on a relatively normal sleep schedule.

fathers day,father,dad,holiday,family - Father's ... - IdeaMarketers.com

O.K. Everyone understands why Mother's Day is a big deal. I loved my mom and miss her very much. I appreciated her while she was alive and have no regrets now that she has passed. But it always bothered me that mothers get all the attention on their holiday, while dads barely a get quick nod. Moms get flowers, candy and taken out to a wonderful dinner with all the trimmings. Dad gets a bad tie or a gift card to some fast food place. Hey, dads are people too!

I think that most kids, especially adult children, look at their dads as these strong super heros that go about doing good without any desire for appreciation or renumeration. I can understand that because it is a kind of traditional view. What I can't understand is why people still think that way today. Didn't anyone watch the Cosby Show or Family Ties when they were still on? Ever heard of re-runs?

It bothers me that people think being a mom is all about sacrifice. Sure, a lot of mothers give up things like jobs, spare time, educational opportunities and money for their kids, but many dads do the same thing. When mothers do it it is noble and earns them a great deal of sympathy and a lifetime of appreciation. When dads do it everyone thinks they are selfish. Their sacrifices are always misunderstood. Just look at the endless pile of non-fiction and fiction books, TV shows and movies about the dad who worked all the time and had no time for his family. Did anyone ever stop to think that he might not have had a whole lot of choice in the matter?

I have been married to the same goddess for over twenty-five years and I cannot and will not ever say anything bad about her. My wife is a saint. That said, a lot falls on a man when he becomes a husband and even more so when he becomes a father. That traditional view of dads that I mentioned earlier kicks in and people expect husbands and fathers to bring home the bacon, and the more the better.

When my wife and I were first married it was just us. It was nice to be able to go out without worrying about babysitters or calling home to check on the kids. Despite that kind of freedom, there were still bills and they had to be paid. My wife and I have always worked, but at different times. When we first married I had the only income and that put a lot of pressure on me. At no point did I ever want to have to tell my wife that I couldn't afford to buy food or pay an essential bill, so I worked hard and put in long hours.

My work hours became even longer after our first child was born. The choice was simple: Work less, spend more time at home and be short on the bill money, or, work more, spend less time at home and pay the bills. I chose the latter and have always believed it was a responsible choice. As more children came along my work hours increased. With regard to fairness, I took job breaks and briefly became a stay-at-home dad from time to time so that my wife could pursue her education and career goals.

My pet peeve about Father's Day started back in the late 1980s. I was watching a talk show about fathers and it was either just before or just after dad's ?special' day. There a guy on the show that was probably in his early sixties. His wife and family dragged him on to the show on false pretenses. He was told he was there to help celebrate Father's Day and to be appreciated by his wife and children. Imagine this dad's surprise when he found out that the real reason for his presence was so that his family could confront him about retiring. He refused to retire and had spent a good portion of his life working long hours. That helped him to buy a home, keep the bills paid, take care of his wife and comfortably raise five kids.

The situation quickly deteriorated into a verbal free for all as this man's wife and kids complained about the fact that his work was his life and that he had never spent what they felt was enough time with them. It was always work, work and more work. Now that he could retire, he refused to do so and they said that just proved their point. Of course none of his adult children said anything about helping dad and mom with some cash if he did choose to retire and ran short of bill money from time to time. And it didn't seem like anyone on that show was worried about what would happen to the medical benefits he received for himself and his wife once he stopped working.

Here this sixty-something year old man was sitting on a talk show couch being brought to task for not retiring and working too hard during his life by a host that never married, raised any children or had those kinds of financial or social responsibilities. That man was there for doing what most husbands and fathers would consider their duty. Neither his wife nor his kids looked like they were starving or had ever done without, but all of them whined about him not spending enough time with them when they needed him the most. Well, eeexxxcccuuussseee uuuusssss! We husbands and dads are not Houdinis. We can't escape work whenever we feel like it to run home because someone has had a bad day. When dads have a bad day it's like: Oh, well they do call it WORK, don't they!

I have always tried to be very sensitive to the emotional needs of my wife and children. For me that's part of the job of being a husband and father. Despite that, I could see myself sitting on some talk show couch and listening to Dr Phil's psycho-babble about me or some other host's complaints about what a lousy job I did as a father. Not to be tacky, but perhaps Dr Phil should take some of his own advice. Either way, it's time for dads who cared enough to take care of their families to get the royal treatment on Father's Day. It's also time for everyone to stop whining about their husbands and fathers, and how much time they give to their families.

Nobody's perfect and tough choices are a big part of being a spouse and parent as both husbands and wives know all to well. I hope that as Father's Day draws near all of you kids that have fathers who have worked hard and taken care of you will remember to give good old dad the same royal treatment that you give to to your sainted moms. It's not like you have to bring him breakfast in bed, but be nice enough to spend the day with him and do some special things that you know he would like.

Thunder top Lakers 106-90 to reach West finals

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Ramon Sessions did the best he could to keep Russell Westbrook from making a high-flying dunk that would energize the Oklahoma City Thunder.

No matter.

Even with his feet flat on the ground, Westbrook found a way to get the Thunder rolling past the Los Angeles Lakers and into the Western Conference finals for the second straight year.

After Sessions committed a foul to stop him on the fast break, Westbrook flipped the ball up toward the rim and got it to go in for what would become a three-point play. Westbrook took off toward the scorer's table, pumping his fist as the home crowd celebrated.

There was no turning back after that, and Oklahoma City pulled away for a 106-90 victory in Game 5 on Monday night to knock the Lakers out of the playoffs.

"That was an amazing play," coach Scott Brooks said. "Obviously, there's a lot of luck to that. You put yourself in that position to get a little lucky there.

"I thought from that point on, we really played with great energy on the offensive end, moved the ball and made shots."

Westbrook finished with 28 points, Kevin Durant added 25 points and 10 rebounds and the two All-Stars skipped their usual rest periods to power the Thunder ahead in the second half.

After Westbrook's pair of three-point plays fueled a 14-3 burst that put Oklahoma City ahead to stay late in the third quarter, Durant hit two 3-pointers as the Thunder scored the first 10 points of the fourth to push their lead to 93-77.

Los Angeles never got closer than 13 after that.

"That's a tough team, man. They weren't laying down," Westbrook said. "We got a little down on ourselves and we had to come together and be better teammates, and we did that."

Kobe Bryant scored 42 points for the Lakers and took the briefest of rest ? less than 2 minutes ? in the second half. It didn't even take that long for the game, and their season, to slip away.

Bryant was waiting to check in when Durant connected on his second 3-pointer, just 89 seconds into the fourth quarter. But by the time he got in, there was little he could do ? despite the 13th 40-point game of his playoff career.

After getting eliminated by Los Angeles in 2010 and Dallas in 2011 before both of those teams went on to win it all, the Thunder knocked both out on their way to the West finals for the second straight year.

The only other time the franchise made consecutive conference finals was from 1978-80, including Seattle's only NBA title in 1979.

Once there, they'll face top-seeded San Antonio, which is riding an 18-game winning streak and is the only team other than the Lakers or Mavs to win the West in the past 13 years. The series starts Sunday night in San Antonio.

Los Angeles has followed back-to-back championships with two straight second-round exits.

"I'm not fading into the shadows," said Bryant, a five-time NBA champion with the Lakers. "I'm not going anywhere. We're not going anywhere."

Certainly, not this offseason.

Westbrook made sure of that when he went running to the scorer's table and pumped his fist in the air after his energizing three-point play.

"I just tried to throw it to the rim and luckily it went in. That kind of sparked us, and everybody else kept it going from there," Westbrook said.

Westbrook converted another after banking in a jumper from the left side despite Sessions slapping him on the arm to make it 82-76 with 1:29 left in the third quarter.

Durant extended the lead with a 3-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth and then hit another 32 seconds later ? just after Bryant had stepped to the scorer's table to check in after a brief rest.

Bryant described it as "tough, to say the least."

After blowing a fourth-quarter lead in Game 4, Bryant had called out forward Pau Gasol to be more aggressive ? much as he had with Gasol and Bynum before the Lakers faced elimination in Game 7 of the first round against Denver.

Gasol then came through with a monster game ? 23 points, 17 rebounds and six assists ? and Steve Blake scored a playoff career-best 19 points to save the Lakers that time. Bryant didn't get nearly as much help against the Thunder.

Gasol took 14 shots, his most of the series, but made only five to finish with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Metta World Peace scored 11 and Bynum 10.

James Harden added 17 points as Oklahoma City's bench outscored L.A.'s 35-5. The Thunder also had a 30-6 edge in fast-break scoring. The Lakers were outrebounded 51-35 and had only three offensive rebounds, two from Gasol and none from Bynum.

"We're asking our bigs to do a lot, but I know for sure we could have gotten more scoring from those two guys in the offensive rebounding category ... and we could have gotten more from our bench," Lakers coach Mike Brown said.

Bryant had to create all of the offense early, scoring 15 of the Lakers' first 19 points and getting all six of his baskets without the benefit of an assist. When others started chipping in, the Lakers went on a 16-7 run to go up 35-32 following Bynum's three-point play.

Oklahoma City scored the next eight points, including Harden's fast-break dunk, before Bryant got past him for a pair of dunks of his own ? the first a driving, two-handed reverse jam and the second a two-handed alley-oop slam over Harden.

But Bryant and World Peace both drew technical fouls as the Lakers lost their cool with 31.9 seconds left before halftime when World Peace was called for a flagrant foul against Thabo Sefolosha on a fast break. World Peace used his right hand to strip the ball from Sefolosha as he went up to the basket but then shoved him out of bounds with his left hand.

Sefolosha hit both free throws and Durant capitalized on both shots from the technicals World Peace and Bryant got for arguing the flagrant call to put the Thunder 54-51 ahead at halftime despite shooting less than 40 percent.

Notes: The Lakers had baskets just after the buzzer at the end of the second and third quarters that both got reviewed on instant replay. ... Westbrook got a technical foul for cursing at an official after a no-call midway through the first quarter. ... The Thunder's Nick Collison needed stitches to close a cut on the back of his head that he sustained during Game 4. ... Los Angeles is 10-3 when Bryant scores 40 points in the playoffs, losing both times he did it this season.
