Mixed feelings in Ouellet family: We'd 'prefer to have a brother' than a pope

LA MOTTE, Que. - A Canadian cardinal seen as a papal front-runner is also known for fancying family moose-steak dinners, eating dessert off a sibling's plate, and gunning his uncle's tractor until it broke.

If he becomes pope, however, Cardinal Marc Ouellet's family fears such intimate moments will be lost forever.

"We know that it would be over," his younger brother, Roch, said in an interview in their hometown of La Motte, in Quebec's northwest.

"We're quite frank about it as a family ? we would prefer to have a brother."

It's been decades since the cardinal has lived in this rural region, some 600 kilometres northwest of Montreal. But he has made regular visits to the area, usually twice a year, to see his siblings and their 90-year-old mother, Graziella.

The 68-year-old cardinal, third-eldest in a family of six boys and two girls, now holds one of the most powerful jobs in the Roman Catholic Church. He's in charge of the international process to name bishops and consults regularly the pope.

Since the cardinal's name was floated in 2005 as a long-shot contender for the papacy, his family has long understood he could be asked to don the silk, red slippers.

"This is one of the risks ? that maybe one day he will be called upon to lead this church," said Roch, 63, as he sat in La Motte's old church, which was built with the help of their father and grandfathers.

"But his path... belongs to him. We totally respect it."

That road to Rome began at the family farm in La Motte.

Roch remembers his older brother in a number of ways: as an excellent student, a gifted angler, and a partridge hunter who never turned down moose meat from those who bagged the big catches.

He also had a great appetite, says Roch, adding that his brother would eat dessert off others' plates when they didn't get to it quickly enough.

When it came to work, Marc was known for being impatient at times, a teen who tried to do more than he was asked to do ? and faster. Roch says his brother frequently broke things on Uncle Wilfrid's tractor while pushing the machine to its limit on the hay field.

Marc's also the sibling who almost burned the barn to the ground.

The building ignited while a young Marc was playing with matches nearby, Roch says. The fire was extinguished, and the barn saved, thanks to a quick response from an alert neighbour.

"That was a bit of an innocent gesture by a young person who didn't think about the consequences," says Roch.

"He wasn't an angel."

Marc, however, was something of a guardian angel at times to his younger brother, Roch recalls.

He remembers fishing with Marc at nearby Lac La Motte when a violent thunderstorm rolled in over their heads. Roch was around seven years old at the time and Marc was about 13.

After one particularly loud clap of thunder, the terrified boys dropped a fishing rod and fell to the ground. Roch remembers that Marc quickly rose back to his feet and led them home.

"He stayed in control," Roch says.

"He was probably as scared as I was, but I felt like I had a protector."

In recent weeks, from thousands of kilometres away in Rome, Marc has become the protector of another loved one: their mother.

He sent a message home to his family in La Motte last month shortly after Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation.

Marc instructed them to think of their elderly mother's well-being before anything else during what he predicted would be an inevitable media storm.

"He told us: 'Be polite, be vigilant and the most essential thing is to protect our mother. Don't open up the house to everyone,' " Roch said of Marc, who has become misty-eyed and emotional in the past when talking to journalists about his mother.

The cardinal's love for his family has also been put to the test in recent years.

His brother Paul Ouellet was convicted a few years ago of sexual assault involving two minors, stemming from incidents in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Marc, who was archbishop of Quebec City at the time, had refused to comment on the case of his younger brother, who took out newspaper ads to explain the assaults.

Roch says Marc and Paul still speak regularly.

"These are two brothers who speak a lot. They have always talked, they have never lost touch," he says, adding the family has the same amount of affection toward every member.

"Their brotherly love was quite a bit stronger than all the stories swirling around, more than people know."

Discovery may explain how prion diseases spread between different types of animals

Mar. 11, 2013 ? Medical researchers at the University of Alberta have made a discovery that may explain how prion diseases, like chronic wasting disease and mad cow disease, adapt in order to spread between various types of animals.

The research team, led by neurologist Valerie Sim, discovered that a miniscule change in the prions' makeup appears to give the disease the ability to adapt -- to mimic and recreate new strains with which it comes into contact. The team has been studying this area for two years.

"Prion diseases don't always successfully go from one animal to another, but when they do, the process is called adaptation. And we want to figure out what triggers that process to happen, what changes happen within prions to allow the disease to spread," says Sim, a researcher with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, whose discovery was recently published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Biological Chemistry.

"One of the important things researchers in this field have realized is that if you pass certain strains of prion disease through a number of different hosts, the disease can adapt along the way and increase the number of susceptible hosts. That's the big concern right now.

"We want to determine why one prion disease might be able to spread from one type of animal to another and why another strain of the disease can't."

For instance, if a deer with chronic wasting disease is scavenged by another animal, could the prion disease cross into that intermediate host, evolve and then infect animals or species typically not at direct risk for the disease.

"We hope to understand how these bigger issues develop," says Sim. "We need to pay attention to chronic wasting disease in particular because it has the ability to spread in a different way than mad cow disease. Chronic wasting disease prions can be deposited into the soil and stay there for years, and could be eaten by another animal. How does it evolve from there then?"

Sim and her team are continuing their research in this area and are seeing impressive results in the lab -- reconfirming their findings through the testing of additional models.

Sim works in the Department of Medicine in the Division of Neurology. She is cross-appointed to the Centre for Neuroscience and the Centre for Prions and Protein Folding Diseases.

Her team's research was funded by Alberta Innovates -- Health Solutions (AIHS), PrioNet Canada and the Alberta Prion Research Institute.

WaitUntilTheSunset: Brand Spotlights: eShakti review

eShakti are without a doubt, my favourite go-to brand for perfect fitting, classic and wonderfully made fashion. And of course, the fact that all items are available from size 0-36 makes them an absolute star in my eyes. A brand that understands the need for a full range of sizes and caters for the bulk of the population is pretty rare. Let alone at affordable prices and in such a wide range of styles!

I've written about them several times and now have quite a few of their pieces on high rotation (let alone the pieces I've handed on to Suger and Kath!). Being totally customisable, I know I'm always going to get exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I love the dress but want a different neckline- no worries!!! eShakti have you covered! So when they contacted me about a product review, I more than jumped at the chance!!!

Dress: eShakti (c/o)

Tights: Kmart

Blazer: ASOS Curve

Shoes: swapped at PSFWA

Clutch: a thrift shop find!

I chose this fabulous swan print peter pan collar dress (I would link to it but it appears it was too popular and sold out!). I requested the sleeves to be changed to this cute little cap sleeve style and changed the length to a short-dress. In hindsight, the mini probably wasn't the most practical length and I'll be ordering my dresses in the above the knee length instead in the future.

Size wise, I find their measurements tables more or less spot on. This is a size 3X 24 and it fits perfectly. Comfortable over my bust, nipped in at the waist and relaxed over my hips- like a dream!

I can literally spend hours drooling over the eShakti website. With high stock turn around and constant new items I am always finding new items that I add to my lust-list! Here are a few of the goodies catching my eye at the moment!
?And even better, eShakti have very kindly given me a promo code to share with you guys! So, when you go and check out their website (and no doubt fill up your shopping bag the way I do!), when checking out use this promo code for 20% off! WTNTLTHESN
Promo code for 20% storewide

For shipping to Australia, I use shipito.com, a mail forwarding service in the USA. They are fast and?reasonably?priced and exactly what I need to get my goodies home to Brisbane!

Do you have any favourite items on the eShakti website????

The SoMoLo Fever Has Finally Broken at SXSW

The era of the Social-Mobile-Local app has finally closed at SXSW Interactive, thank goodness.?This year, according to multiple on-the-scene previewers, variations on the same?boring apps?have not taken over the interactive conference, which famously launched SoMoLo champion Foursquare, and also helped lot of other apps attract tech nerd fans. Last year the trend was still in full force, as chronicled by The New York Times's Jenna Wortham: "Kismet,?Glancee,?Highlight,?Ban.jo,?Meeteor,?Pearescope,?GetGauss,?Intro,?Qrious,?Mingle?and?Sonar, hope to transform the smartphone into a social dowsing rod that delivers an alert when it detects other people nearby who share interests, friends or career goals." But today, at SXSW 2013, it's not apps, it's stuff that's hot. "This year, it might be a piece of hardware that steals the show,"?writes Wortham in her SXSW preview this year?a big shift for a festival that?arguably?made Twitter big.?

RELATED: Translating SXSW Tweets for the Left Behind

One of the big reasons for the change? So few of those services touted last year caught on in a big way one year later. Writing from SXSW last year, our correspondent Dashiell Bennett explained why aspiring app makers had hoped to use the conclave of techies as a hothouse for their social creations: "Success here in Austin may or may not translate to the wider world, but if you can't make these people care enough to adopt early, then you can't make anyone adopt it ever." So this year, there's a new strategy and products, to which we say, it's about time.?

RELATED: Your Final SXSWi Power Rankings

The SoMoLo fatigue described by AllThingsD's Lauren Goode?has been taking hold for quite some time. "There are so many apps, the barrier is harder to break through," Venture Capitalist Bill Tai told Goode.?"For mobile start-ups it can be very frustrating and difficult to fight your way through the noise," an industry analyst added to Wortham. People only want so many apps that essentially do the same thing. That's the big picture. In the microclimate of Austin: people can't use your great new app if the overwhelmed Austin WiFi network isn't working and people are desperately trying to preserve their battery charge. Macro or micro, the thinking is that things which do not rely on smartphones may have a better chance of breaking through.?

RELATED: The Boss Takes SXSW; Blago's Early Morning Farewell

"There is more hardware happening at South by Southwest this year than ever before," Hugh Forrest, SXSW lead organizer, told Wortham. He estimates at least two dozen gadget related this year, like this Leap Motion Controller, which allows people to control gadgets without touching them. But the hardware revolution also reflects changing trends in the tech world. "It?s a new thing and that newness is always sexy," ?Forrest?told Bloomberg's Adam Satariano and Douglas MacMillan. This newness has to do with a drop in manufacturing costs because of better methods that make it faster and easier to develop things, as The New York Times's Nick Bilton and John Markoff explained last August. Trends like 3D printing, for example, have made making things a lot less risky. So, people are just putting together devices and gadgets and seeing what happens.?

Looks pretty useful. And even if none of these things take-off, at least we don't have to say the word SoMoLo again.?

Video: Costco CEO joins Obama, calls for increase in minimum wage

>>> welcome back. the ceo of one of the country's biggest retailers costco joining president obama calling for an increase in the minimum wage . costco 's ceo says instead of minimizing wages, it is profitable in the long term to minimize employee turnover and maximize employee productivities, commitment and loyalty. he's backing a bill to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 by 2016 . state of the union address , president made a call on congress to act.

>> let's declare that in the wealthiest nation on earth no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty. and raise the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour.

>> but not all business leaders agree that it's a good idea. subway ceo fred deluca says it's a bad idea. joining me is co-founder and ceo of the u.s. women's chamber of commerce . thank you for joining us, margo.

>> thank you for having me, tamron.

>> in this world it's difficult to get a consensus on anything but seeing two ceos, costco and subway, so different in the opinions on this, we thought we'd bring in an independent voice and get your thoughts at least on the debate over minimum wage here. both sides of the case. first, let's look at the case of it will cause prices to increase for consumers. what proof of that exists?

>> well, tamron, i don't know that there is any proof of that. this is an argument over the years every time we tried to raise the man mum wage and we have done so we have not found that to be a fact. in fact, what we would see is increase in consumer spending which would be very beneficial for business owners.

>> speaker boehner right after the state of the union said when you raise the price of employment, guess what happens. you get less of it. at a time when the american people are asking when where's the jobs, why would we want to make it hader for small employers to hire people? is this the indication of the size of the company? we're talking about tremendously successful companies of costco and subway. is it a different dynamic looking at a smaller business?

>> i believe it is. and i can speak for firms that we represent and women-owned firms tend to take a living wage to begin with so this bill and raising the minimum wage would not impact them. in fact, it would level the playing field so when they go out to compete against those firm that is are not paying fairly, everybody will have the same grounds for payment and that would help them access contracts.

>> obviously, just by the numbers here, wanting to show people to remind them, yearly income at the minimum wage is about $15,000 a year. and i think a lot of people one point in time when they thought about a minimum wage jobs, they would think of teenagers but we know in this economy with so many people out of work so long and taking jobs to make ends meet, these are adults caring for their families and themselves and trying to make it on $15,000 a year, margot. that's absolutely right. it impacts two thirds of the minimum wage worker who is are women. and additionally, i think the key thing that people aren't thinking about is flip side is as a taxpayer. as a taxpayer, i'm now asked to subsidize the corporations not paying a living wage by providing government assistance programs and thinking in those terms, it would be good for everyone to pay a living wage so that these workers would be able to self sustain and put money back in to the pocketbooks and ultimately in to purchases within their communities.

>> margot, we greatly appreciate you joining us. the president mentioned many things in the institution and we see how soon the conversation heats up over the minimum wage . thank you.

>> thank you.

ShermanAP

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman quickly has become one of the most polarizing figures in football.? Starting with his decision to get in the face of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady after Seattle upset New England during the regular season and continuing through his recent Twitter battle with Jets (for now) cornerback Darrelle Revis, Sherman has landed on the national radar screen in a way that many regard as good, and that many regard as bad.

His fans say Sherman is confident.? Foes call him arrogant. On Thursday, he gave plenty of ammunition to the latter in his over-the-top effort to take down ESPN?s Skip Bayless.? Hardly a likeable figure in his own right, Bayless came off at times as the victim while absorbing a clumsy, charmless stream of insults from Sherman.Deadspin has the video.

?Skip, whenever you refer to me, whenever you speak to me, whenever you address me, address me as All-Pro Stanford graduate, because those are some accomplishments you will never ? you can aspire to, you will never accomplish,? Sherman said, right out of the gates.? ?You have never accomplished anything.?

Bayless wasn?t about to back down.? ?I think I?ve accomplished more in my field than you have in yours,? Bayless said.

?I?m at the top of my field,? Sherman declared.? ?I?m All-Pro.? I?m one of the best 22 players in the NFL.? You?re gonna brush it off.? But I don?t think you?re the best 22 anything.? In sports, in media, in anything.? I think you think more of yourself than you can actually prove.? In my 24 years of life, I?m better at life than you.?

?Do you think you?re better than Darrelle Revis right now?? Bayless asked.

?I?m better than you,? Sherman said.Later, Sherman said that Bayless is an ?ignorant, pompous, egotistical cretin, and I?m gonna crush you on here in front of everybody, because I?m tired of hearing about it.?

For as bad as the words, the delivery was worse.? Sherman displayed no charisma, which often is the difference between words being perceived as humorously brash and insufferably rude.

If that?s the attitude Sherman needs to have in order to be the best he can be on the field, that?s fine.? But it won?t win him many admirers beyond those who already are fans of the Seahawks.

Global leaders, celebrities honor Chavez at funeral

CARACAS (Reuters) - Mourners from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to U.S. Oscar-winner Sean Penn paid an emotional farewell to Hugo Chavez at Friday's funeral for the charismatic but divisive Venezuelan leader who changed the face of politics in South America.

Chavez died this week at age 58 after a two-year battle with cancer, devastating millions of mostly poor supporters who loved him for putting the country's vast oil wealth at their service, but giving hope to foes who saw him as a dictator.

A frequent visitor to Caracas and fellow "anti-imperialist," Ahmadinejad received a standing ovation as he took his place in a guard of honor by Chavez's coffin, then broke protocol to touch the casket and clench his fist in a revolutionary salute.

"Commander, here you are undefeated, pure, living for all time," Chavez's preferred successor, acting President Nicolas Maduro, said over the casket, his voice cracking with emotion.

"Your soul and spirit are so powerful that your body could not hold them, and now they are traveling this universe, growing with blessings and love."

The mourners chanted: "Chavez lives! The fight continues!"

Maduro laid a replica of the sword of 19th century independence leader Simon Bolivar on top of the coffin, which was draped in the country's red, yellow and blue flag.

A singer in a cowboy hat serenaded the mourners with music from Chavez's birthplace in Venezuela's "llanos" plains.

The late president's body is to be embalmed and shown "for eternity" - similar to how Communist leaders Lenin, Stalin and Mao were treated after their deaths.

His remains will lie in state for an extra seven days to accommodate the millions of Venezuelans who still want to pay their last respects to a man who will be remembered as one of the world's most colorful and controversial populist leaders.

Huge crowds of "Chavistas" gathered from before dawn for the ceremony at a military academy where his body was lying in state. Many were dressed in the red of the ruling Socialist Party, carrying his picture and waving Venezuelan flags.

"I asked God to grant him life, not me," said Leonida Munoz, 73, wearing a T-shirt bearing the image of Chavez's eyes. "He deserves to live more than I do."

She said she had been waiting more than 26 hours to view Chavez's coffin. More than 2 million people have filed past the casket since Wednesday, many sobbing, some saluting, and others crossing themselves.

In Caracas were most of Chavez's highest-profile Latin American friends, such as Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa and Brazil's former leader, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

"Most importantly, he left undefeated," Cuban President Raul Castro said, referring to Chavez's four presidential election wins, among a string of other ballot victories in his 14-year rule.

"He was invincible. He left victorious and no one can take that away. It is fixed in history."

Celebrity mourners included U.S. civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, who led a prayer at the service and renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

Dudamel, who heads Venezuela's Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led musicians at the funeral playing classical numbers and the national anthem.

ELECTION COMING

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Ahmadinejad were among the more controversial figures present. Ahmadinejad has caused a storm back home for saying Chavez would be resurrected alongside Jesus Christ and a "hidden" imam who Shi'ite Muslims believe will rise up to bring world peace.

As well as leftist friends of Chavez, conservative leaders such as Chile's Sebastian Pinera and Colombia's Juan Manuel Santos were at the funeral.

The United States did not send senior officials.

Former U.S. Representative William Delahunt and U.S. Representative Gregory Meeks were attending, amid speculation of a possible post-Chavez rapprochement between the two ideologically opposed governments.

A government source said Chavez slipped into a coma on Monday before dying the following day of respiratory failure. The cancer had spread to his lungs, the source added.

Chavez never said what type of cancer he was suffering, and for privacy, chose to be mainly treated in Cuba.

His death paved the way for a new election in the OPEC nation that boasts the world's biggest oil reserves. But it is unclear when the vote will be held.

At the gates of the academy, activists handed out photos of Chavez along with printed quotes of his call for supporters to vote for Maduro should anything happen to him.

The constitution stipulates that an election must be called within 30 days, but politicians say the electoral authorities may not be ready and there has been talk of a possible delay.

Maduro, 50, a former bus driver who became foreign minister and then vice president, looks certain to face opposition leader Henrique Capriles, 40, the centrist governor of Miranda state who lost to Chavez in October's election. He will be sworn in as caretaker leader after the funeral on Friday.

The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that Maduro would not have to step down to campaign. Capriles called the decision a "constitutional fraud."

Opposition sources say the 30 or so political groupings making up the Democratic Unity coalition have again agreed to back Capriles, whose 44 percent vote share in 2012 was the best performance by any candidate against Chavez.

Contrasting with the outpouring of grief at the funeral, senior opposition figure Leopoldo Lopez cautioned that the post-Chavez era would not automatically bring a brighter future.

"The uncertainty goes on, as does the gross meddling by Cuba and the flagrant violation of the constitution. Our people continue to be overwhelmed by insecurity, inflation and food shortages," he said. "We call on all Venezuelans to join the struggle to build a peaceful way out of the crisis."

Two recent opinion polls gave Maduro a strong lead over Capriles, and Western investors and foreign diplomats are factoring in a probable win for Maduro and a continuation of "Chavista" policies, at least in the short term.

The latest survey, by respected local pollster Datanalisis, gave Maduro 46.4 percent versus 34.3 percent for Capriles. It was carried out on in mid-February, before Chavez's death.

At scene of her shooting, Giffords urges Congress to expand ...

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords speaks in Tucson, Ariz., in support of background checks for gun purchases. Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, returned to the scene where she was shot in 2011.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned Wednesday to the Arizona grocery store where she was shot to push Congress to expand background checks for gun purchases.

?Be bold. Be courageous. Please support background checks. Thank you very much,? said Giffords, speaking carefully in a brief appearance at the podium.

Giffords appeared at the Safeway in Tucson with her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, and with survivors and relatives of victims of the January 2011 shooting. Besides Giffords, six people were killed and 12 wounded.

The former congresswoman also placed a bouquet on a memorial at the supermarket.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote Thursday on a bill that would toughen penalties for people who buy guns illegally for others and to make gun trafficking a felony.

Giffords and Kelly?s group, Americans For Responsible Solutions, is airing TV ads in Arizona to persuade Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican, to back universal background checks.

A Flake spokeswoman said Wednesday that the senator opposes universal background checks. She said Flake supports making sure mental health records are better integrated into the background-check system ?so that those who shouldn?t have access to guns are barred from purchasing them.?

Asked about universal background checks on NBC?s ?Meet the Press? last month, Arizona?s other senator, Republican John McCain, said senators were working on a bill ?that I think that most of us will be able to support.?

Jared Lee Loughner, 24, was sentenced in November to seven consecutive life sentences, plus 140 years, after pleading guilty in Giffords? shooting. Giffords was at the Safeway for a meet-and-greet with constituents on Jan. 8, 2011.

It was not the first time Giffords had returned to the Tucson Safeway. She was there for the anniversary of her shooting.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Prepare Your Pockets, Samsung?s Next Galaxy Note Phablet Could Sport A 5.9-Inch Screen

Samsung?s Galaxy S IV hasn?t even been revealed yet and news of another top-tier Samsung smartphone is already threatening to steal some of its spotlight. The Korea Times reported earlier today that the Korean electronics giant is busy working on a Galaxy Note phablet followup with a 5.9-inch display behind closed doors.

If the Korea Times? report holds true then Samsung is taking a more measured approach to how it scales up smartphone screen sizes ? as PocketNow points out this is (thankfully?) a hair smaller than what some earlier rumors suggested, since for a while there it looked like Samsung was considering pushing out a phablet with a 6.3-inch screen. The Times? source also noted that the Note III would sport an eight-core Exynos processor, a not-so-subtle reference to Samsung?s Exynos 5 Octa chipset.

Samsung isn?t the first to push up against that 6-inch barrier, and they?ll hardly be the last. Chinese OEM Huawei blew past it earlier this year when it unveiled the hefty Ascend Mate and its 6.1-inch screen at CES, and ZTE revealed its 5.7-inch Grand Memo during Mobile World Congress. For better or worse, the plus-sized phone trend doesn?t seem to be going anywhere.

In the past I?ve asked how big is too big for these sorts of phablets, but looking back that?s sort of a restrictive question. The word ?phablet? doesn?t have a universally accepted definition (it?s usually just used to refer to big honking phones) ? perhaps the better question is at what point are devices like the Note and Grand Memo more tablet than phone?

For what it?s worth, Samsung and rivals like Huawei and Asus seem keen on making that sort of distinction a meaningless one. The Korea Times report comes just days after Samsung pulled back the curtain on its Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress ? it?s the company?s smallest Note tablet to date and some versions of the device feature the ability to make voice calls. Asus (perhaps swept up in a fit of wordplay-induced whimsy) also showed off its 7-inch FonePad tablet at MWC, and touted its ability to place voice calls almost as much as its reasonable price tag.

Exclusive: Hedge fund Portman Square scales back, CEO steps down - sources

LONDON/ZURICH (Reuters) - The chief executive of one of Europe's most talked-about new hedge fund firms has stepped down in a bid to save costs after a big investor pulled its support, people familiar with the situation said.

London-based Portman Square Capital was founded by Citigroup's former head of proprietary trading Sutesh Sharma last year but is yet to start trading. It has scaled back funding plans to $200 million from an original $500 million target, said two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The smaller asset base has forced Portman to review its fixed costs and it has concluded it can no longer afford to keep Andrew Mack, formerly of Morgan Stanley, as CEO after just five months in the job.

Mack, who stepped down as CEO this week after joining the company in September, will remain at the firm in an advisory role, a Portman spokeswoman confirmed. She declined to comment on the fund's asset raising or expected launch date.

Last month portfolio manager Paul Godfrey left Portman after the hedge fund decided to narrow its trading strategy, the two sources also said, although the fund will continue to trade a range of assets.

Portman's fortunes underline the tough times for new hedge funds as investors choose to put their cash in bigger, established managers. Some prominent start-ups have also shut down after failing to make money.

Portman has its origins in Old Lane Partners, a $4.5 billion hedge fund Sharma co-founded with ex-Citi CEO Vikram Pandit. The decision to scale back its fundraising target is a far cry from the success some Portman members enjoyed at that firm.

Old Lane landed Pandit with $165 million personally when he sold the firm to Citi in July 2007 for $800 million.

Citi then shut Old Lane, leaving Sharma to become its proprietary trading head while Pandit went on to run the U.S. bank until an abrupt exit last year following a boardroom clash.

Sharma and his team began moves to set up on their own when Citi decided to shut down its Principal Strategies unit ahead of new regulations restricting banks' use of their own capital to make bets.

Other Old Lane employees now at Portman include Lalit Kishore Das, the Financial Services Authority register shows.

Prime brokers had touted Portman, which takes its name from the address of the London offices where the team sat while at Citi, to become one of largest launches since the financial crisis.

The firm initially attracted prominent staff from the banking world. Before joining Portman as CEO in September, Mack had spent several years at Morgan Stanley, including as head of Europe for its investment management division.

Under the scaled back team, Sharma will add the CEO brief to his role while Sylvain Imbert, who also worked at Citi, will become chief risk officer in place of Mack.

Twitter's mobile app tweaked in update

Twitter has added and refined a few features in the latest release of its official Twitter apps for iOS and Android. Search, autocomplete, and the built-in browser all get touch-ups.

Finding a specific tweet, especially a high-profile one, should be easier now: Searching will show one on top of the others that the service thinks you're looking for ? say, Curiosity's enthusiastic tweet after landing on Mars, rather than related ones. Search also should show better autocomplete options for hashtags, users, and so on.

Follow a link in a tweet and you'll be taken to the in-app browser, and now the tweet itself will stay in view at the bottom of the screen. That way, it it feels less like a departure from Twitter.

Head to the App Store or Play Store to download the latest update.

Facebook Is the Google of Mobile

morpheus

?This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill ? the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill ? you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.?
Morpheus, The Matrix

Even though we may not realize it, we live in the matrix today. Often, it is easier to date someone who lives across the globe through text messaging and Skype than it is to sit across the table from him or her having dinner. We have the red pill ? the world before mobile ? and then the wonderful blue pill that takes us to exotic places through our iPhones, Galaxies, and Droids via a rapidly growing and powerful mobile applications ecosystem. With these, we can instantly be transported to many places at the same time ? our friend?s adventure in Egypt on Instagram, a heavily tweeted TED conference in San Diego, or a real-time fashion party joined by thousands of women across the country ? all the while having a glass of wine at the Press Club in San Francisco.

This mobile revolution is reshaping entire industries and perhaps more interestingly, shifting power from traditional search to new ways of discovery. Over the last six months, while the public has pondered its mobile strategy, Facebook has quietly emerged as the superpower of application discovery, and is progressively playing a powerful role in reshaping e-commerce, media and advertising on mobile platforms. Facebook?s new products ? ranging from open graph and timeline to mobile installs ? are reshaping how brands, companies and app developers can connect with their audiences and facilitate discovery in a crowded app world.

In the early days of the Web, portals, pop-ups and other advertising and discovery systems ruled the ways consumers connected with websites. The advertising engines and portals were very fragmented. Yahoo?s home page provided one of the most powerful discovery tools for the consumer. Then Google?s entry into search and the arrival of its advertising platform, Adwords, reshaped how e-commerce, brands and services connected with that same consumer. This repositioned the power of the Web ecosystem and put Google front and center in this new world. In response, advertisers and websites from e-commerce to media shifted their strategies to optimizing for discovery on Google. Whole new classes of advertising agencies were created, and new epicenters of commerce and media were developed to focus on Search Engine Optimization and Paid Search.

As we spend more time under the influence of the magical blue pill, increasing attention and spending is shifting to mobile. Mobile?s inherent advantage in being able to connect offline and online behavior will have massive ramifications on all industries as compared to the Web. Mobile is changing the paradigm of online interactions from searching for content with keywords to pressing a single button and being delighted with new content on our home screens. Collections of blue links are being replaced by visual feeds, keywords with button press, and search by discovery as the dominant method of information consumption. As the mobile infrastructure evolves, Facebook has increasingly positioned itself as the Sun in this new solar system. Last year?s acquisition of Instagram gives Facebook tremendous headroom as it slowly but surely rolls out its mobile products for brands and app developers. Increasing dollars and optimization energies are shifting toward Facebook?s mobile ecosystem and changing the shape of every mobile advertising network and mobile media platform. This seismic shift is akin to what happened in 2000 when Google arrived on the landscape with Adwords, and is positioning Facebook to do to mobile what Google did to search.

If the red pill is the world before mobile, do we even have the option of turning back to a world without navigation apps, instant access to email and photography filters? As we spend more of our time glued to our phones 24/7, we should take a moment to contemplate what is real. As Morpheus says, ?If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then ?real? is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.?

SEFFNER, Fla. (AP) ? Engineers worked gingerly Saturday to find out more about a slowly growing sinkhole that swallowed a Florida man in his bedroom, believing the entire house could eventually succumb to the unstable ground.

It could be days before officials decide whether they will attempt to recover Jeff Bush's body, and they were still trying Saturday to determine the extent of the sinkhole network and what kind of work might be safe. As the sinkhole grows, it may pose further risk to the subdivision and its homes.

Bush, 37, was in his bedroom Thursday night in Seffner ? a suburb of 8,000 people 15 miles east of downtown Tampa ? when the earth opened and took him and everything else in his room. Five others in the house escape unharmed.

On Saturday, the normally quiet neighborhood of concrete block homes painted in Florida pastels was jammed with cars as engineers, reporters, and curious onlookers came to the scene.

At the home next door to the Bushes, a family cried and organized boxes. Testing determined that their house also was compromised by the sinkhole, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman Ronnie Rivera. The family, which had evacuated Friday, was allowed to go inside for about a half-hour to gathering belongings.

Sisters Soliris and Elbairis Gonzalez, who live on the same street as Bushes, said rumors are swirling among neighbors, with people concerned for their safety.

"I've had nightmares," Soliris Gonzalez, 31, said. "In my dreams, I keep checking for cracks in the house."

They said the family has discussed where to go if forced to evacuate, and they've taken their important documents to a storage unit.

"The rest of it, this is material stuff, as long as our family is fine," Soliris Gonzalez said.

"You never know underneath the ground what's happening," added Elbairis Gonzalez, 30.

Experts say thousands of sinkholes erupt yearly in Florida because of the state's unique geography, though most are small and deaths rarely occur.

"There's hardly a place in Florida that's immune to sinkholes," said Sandy Nettles, who owns a geology consulting company in the Tampa area. "There's no way of ever predicting where a sinkhole is going to occur."

Most sinkholes are small, like one found Saturday morning in Largo, 35 miles away from Seffner. The Largo sinkhole, at about 10 feet long and several feet wide, is in a mall parking lot. Such discoveries are common throughout the year in Florida.

The state is prone because it sits on limestone, a porous rock that easily dissolves in water, with a layer of clay on top. The clay is thicker in some locations ? including the area where Bush became a victim ? making them even more prone to sinkholes.

Jonathan Arthur, the state geologist and director of the Florida Geological Survey, said other states sit atop limestone in a similar way, but Florida has additional factors ? extreme weather, development, aquifer pumping and construction ? that can cause sinkholes. "The conditions under which a sinkhole will form can be very rapid, or they can form slowly over time," he said.

But it remained unclear Saturday what, if anything, caused the Seffner sinkhole.

"The condition that caused that sinkhole could have started a million years ago," Nettles said.

Engineers had been testing in the area of the Bush house since 7 a.m. Saturday. By 10 a.m., officials moved media crews farther away so experts could test a home across the street.

Experts spent the previous day on the property, taking soil samples and running tests ? while acknowledging that the entire lot where Bush lay entombed was dangerous. On Saturday, officials were still not allowing anyone in the Bush home.

Jeremy Bush, who tried to rescue his brother when the earth opened, lay flowers and a stuffed lamb near the house Saturday morning and wept.

He said someone came to his home in the Tampa suburb of about 8,000 people a couple of months ago to check for sinkholes and other issues, apparently for insurance purposes, but found nothing wrong. State law requires home insurers to provide coverage against sinkholes.

"And a couple of months later, my brother dies. In a sinkhole," Bush said Friday.

The sinkhole, estimated at 20 feet across and 20 feet deep, caused the home's concrete floor to cave in around 11 p.m. Thursday as everyone in the Tampa-area house was turning in for the night. It gave way with a loud crash that sounded like a car hitting the house and brought Jeremy Bush running.

Engineers said they may have to demolish the small house, even though from the outside there appeared to be nothing wrong with the four-bedroom, concrete-wall structure, built in 1974.

Energy policy shifting as abundance replaces scarcity: Obama adviser

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As U.S. oil and natural gas production booms, the Obama administration's energy policy has been "fluid" by necessity to adapt to the huge economic opportunities and climate challenges posed by growth, the top White House energy and climate adviser said on Wednesday.

In a speech to a room packed with energy analysts and lobbyists, Obama adviser Heather Zichal acknowledged that U.S. energy policy "might not look perfectly pretty from the outside" as it evolves to shifting supply-and-demand scenarios.

"It is a little bit fluid, but the landscape is changing," Zichal said at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think-tank.

The White House wants to ensure oil and gas production is done as safety as possible, while investing in research and development of renewable forms of energy and addressing climate change, she said.

"I think that those goals will really help this administration deliver on an energy policy that makes a lot of sense," Zichal said.

"Energy is the common thread that links these three issues: our economy, our security and our climate," she said.

SHALE REVOLUTION

Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," has blasted massive new supplies of oil and natural gas from shale rock deep beneath the earth. After decades of policies built around being dependent on imports of foreign oil, lawmakers and the administration are grappling with whether and how to allow more exports.

The United States could surpass Saudi Arabia as the world's top oil producer by 2017, and within years could become a net exporter of natural gas.

Zichal noted the administration is finalizing new rules for disclosing chemicals used in fracking on public lands, and tougher standards for fracking wells and wastewater.

"We're not glossing over the challenges of natural gas development, but we're also not ignoring the opportunity natural gas presents for jobs and for the climate," she said.

The White House recognizes the impact oil and natural gas production has had on the economy, creating jobs and bringing manufacturing operations from companies like Dow Chemical Co and Ford Motor Co back from overseas, Zichal said.

She did not shed new light on how the administration will rule on permitting exports to more countries, decisions expected sometime this year. Zichal repeated that the White House is "not opposed to the notion of exports" but wants to ensure they don't "undermine" American consumers.

Zichal said she is spending "a lot of time talking to the rail industry" about infrastructure needs to move a glut of oil from the U.S. Midwest to refineries on the coast, another outcome of the sudden bounty of oil supplies.

But she shied away from discussing White House thinking on the Keystone XL pipeline, a project designed to ship oil from Canada and North Dakota to Gulf refineries.

Zichal said the decision-making process is in the hands of the State Department. The project has been stalled for years pending a decision by the administration.
