baby shower high tea ? the happy home

gretch-baby-shower-invite2

My invite. I?m not exactly an illustrator and I?m still trying to decide whether it?s clever or corny ? a pregnant woman under a tea cup umbrella with tea from a teapot as the ?shower?. Geddit? The patterned background is a freebie download from Love Mae.

I have two pregnant sisters: one a few weeks from bursting; the other a few weeks into her pregnancy! If I didn?t have a baby belly of my own (despite the fact baby exited the womb six months ago?) I?d be feeling mighty left out! Being Gretchen?s first baby, Kristie and I threw her a baby shower on Saturday. Just like Kristie?s, we went for a high tea. And of course my original plan went to s*&# as soon as I ran out of time and then again when the weather decided to revert to winter temps. So our outdoor-under-the-beautiful-trees-of-Gretchen?s-pretty-garden turned into a simple affair indoors. But simple is good ? it was pretty and not OTT which it would have been had I brought my whole outdoorsy idea inside. And so. Here are a few pics ? as usual, when I host, I forget to take half the pictures. Doh!

gretchshower1I have this obsession with hanging things over a table, but prefer it to a massive table centrepiece you cant see through. This time I hung single blooms from the ceiling with fishing wire (masking tape stuck it to the ceiling). I wish we had been able to hold it outside ? this would have been so pretty hanging from the trees?

Hmmm I didnt really notice how much lower that one flower was to the others on the day. It?s bugging me now!!

In the middle of the table an assortment of clear vessels ? jars, drinking and shot glasses are filled with fresh flowers to mimic those above.

For party games Kristie whipped up a nursery rhyme quiz and guess the baby game in the same style as my invites (we all bought a pic of ourselves as babies to guess who was who). Just quietly, I won both games. I?m that good. But didnt count because I was co-host and was not going to take a prize that I bought and wrapped, which, by the way, were sweet notebooks from Typo. The white paper bag is one of the party favours: paper lolly bags filled with vanilla meringues and a sample of a yummy-smelling peppermint, lime blossom and rose loose leaf tea. I made up little tea bags (inspired by the ones at the bottom of this page) out of pretty papers and filled with the tea and stapled a handwritten tag on the other end with the tea type. They looked really cute and I?m kicking myself I didn?t take a picture of them en masse. Or of at least one of them ? I couldn?t even do it afterwards because I forgot to take my own favour bag home. I am part goldfish? Anyway I used decorative scissors to cut the ends off the bags to make them smaller, folded over and secured with some floral fabric tape from Percival Road Designs.

Gretchen?s husband?s late grandmother had the most beautiful assortment of mixed tea cups ? I?m sure they were once sets, but what was left all went beautifully together. She had the mismatched china look perfected (probably accidentally!). I wanted to steal some of them? Oooh and see those scones to the right? You must make them. Delicious. They were my food contribution to the day. Yum. Go here for the recipe.

gretchshower7Gretchen as a baby/little girl. And Kristie and I are in there too ? I?m the daggy looking older child. Gotta love the ?70s decor. Do all photos from the late 70s-eary 80s look exactly the same or what!?!

We had tiers of cupcakes, quices, sandwiches and always healthy marshmallows and meringues.

gretchshower8The mummy to be!

All up it was a lovely day. I made some place settings that we didn?t end up using and some cupcake flags we decorated the sandwiches with. I didn?t take photos of either so will post another time as a little project. Gretch got spoilt by all her friends and family and I cant wait to meet my newest little nephew or niece!
