Marcella Calderon, member of political dynasty and wife of Tom Calderon, dies of cancer

Marcella Calderon, a Montebello Unifed School Board member and part of a powerful political clan, has died from cancer, her family said Monday.

Marcella? s husband, Tom Calderon, released a statement:

?Last night, my wife Marcella Calderon passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer,? he wrote. ?Marcella will be remembered as a committed community leader, relentless advocate for education, and a loving wife and mother. Our family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes. We are making arrangements for a public celebration of life to be held next week. Details will be forthcoming.?

Tom Calderon is running for the 58th Assembly District against Downey Councilman Luis Marquez.

Here?s some biographical information from a statement provided by the family:

Marcella Calderon was a product of the Montebello Unified School District and had been an active leader in local and state politics for over two decades. In 1986, along with her husband, former Assemblymember Thomas M. Calderon, she established Calderon & Associates, a Public and Governmental Relations firm credited with successfully electing over 75 local and state officials from throughout Southern California along with advocating on a number of complex local, state and national policy issues.

Marcella Calderon, was the first Latina to serve as Montebello Unified School District Board President, and had been active in our children?s schools for many years. As a parent volunteer, she played an integral part in helping obtain the largest school bond measure in the district?s history, generating millions of dollars for our kids and schools. As a Board Member, she was committed and dedicated to raising student achievement and making sure the School District continues to be fiscally solvent and accountable to the tax-payers of our community. During her tenure as a Board of Education Member, Calderon helped move the District forward towards excellent student performance.

Marcella Calderon lived in Montebello and is survived by her husband, Tom, and their two children, Cameron and Victoria.
