News And Society ? Easier Information ? Blog Archive ? The Effects ...

There is no federal budget, even though there are only 2 days left until the placeholder budgets expire. The idea of a government shutdown seems more and more real. How this shutdown would impact individuals varies greatly.

Facts about a federal government shutdown

The government could be shut down technically if there is no bill passed by Friday on spending. In practice, individual employers will determine which employees are exempted from the shutdown and which ones are subject to furlough. Some employees will have to go into work still even though they?ll not be getting paid. Anybody who is required to work for the safety of the nation, including the military, FBI and CIA, could be required to continue working.

Continuing agencies

If the government shuts down, some federal firms will nevertheless function relatively normally. Employees will still be paid at the United State USPS that will carry on operating. This is because the agency is self-funded. Air traffic control, social security, Veteran?s services and the military would carry on functioning mostly unchanged, but employees? salaries won?t be issued during that time. Each of these firms is forming a ?shutdown plan? that will guide how they handle the shutdown period.

What would end

It is sure that all essential functions will continue with the government. Still, there are many programs that would just stop. There wouldn?t be passport offices in operation. All auditing would stop at the Internal Revenue Service as the offices would stop causing the IRS helpline to end while paper returns wouldn?t be processed. There won?t be a change to the April 18 deadline. It will remain the same. The Federal Housing Administration and SBA would suspend the review and approval of loans for new homes and smaller businesses. This would shut down national parks and monuments. This includes museums. A spending budget would have to be approved before the services could return. Employee back pay would have to be approved separately. This would be something Congress would have to do.
