Accused Boston mobster Bulger comes home to face judge (Reuters)

BOSTON (Reuters) ? Legendary Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger is coming home after 16 years on the run and is scheduled to appear before a federal judge here late on Friday, a Justice Department spokeswoman said.

Bulger, 81, is expected to be whisked to the federal courthouse in his old South Boston neighborhood soon after his flight from California touches down in Massachusetts.

He will appear before Magistrate Judge Leo Sorokin, spokeswoman Christina Sterling said. Bulger faces 19 counts of murder committed in the 1970s and 1980s, and charges of drug dealing, extortion, money laundering and conspiracy.

His companion, Catherine Greig, 60, who was arrested along with Bulger on Wednesday, is expected to be brought before a different judge in the same courthouse.

The onetime underworld informant and former leader of the Irish-American criminal group the Winter Hill Gang, was one of America's 10 most wanted fugitives, and many in Bulger's old South Boston territory had thought him long dead.

Law enforcement agents never gave up hope of grabbing him alive even after years of cold leads and false sightings. He was finally captured when lured from Santa Monica, California, apartment just blocks from the Pacific by federal agents and police acting on a tip from the public.

His capture has sparked a media frenzy in Boston. The normally quiet courthouse has prepared for a crowd, announcing that an overflow courtroom will be available for the expected media and onlookers.
